Role of Neurotransmitters in Depression
A recent study revealed that patients with mild to moderate depression can greatly benefit from neurotransmitter precursors. The study, titled “The use of neurotransmitter precursors to treat depression,” states that “deficient activity of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine is a central element of the most widely accepted model of depression by neurobiologists today.”
What are neurotransmitters and how do they affect depression in humans?
Depression is often associated with a chemical imbalance in the brain, or at least that’s how the average person perceives it. But there’s more to it than meets the eye. Actually, it’s a bit more complicated than people usually think. There are a number of chemicals that help the brain communicate with other parts of the brain. These chemicals are called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are sent and received by the many nerve cells present in the brain. These nerve cells are called neurons.
Neurons constantly exchange neurotransmitters as a means of communication. This communication is very important for the proper functioning of the brain. Neurons are connected by a small gap called a synapse. When this chain of chemical events is disrupted, it adversely affects the brain and nervous system. And the onset of depression is one of the consequences of such a disorder.
When the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine are imbalanced in the brain, depression results. Thus, the goal of antidepressant drugs is to affect these specific neurotransmitters and their receptors. They tend to fix it and the depression is taken care of.
Serotonin: As a neurotransmitter, serotonin is responsible for regulating many important physiological functions, including sleep, eating, aggression, sexual behavior, and mood. It is produced by serotonergic neurons. Low production of serotonin causes depression in a person. In extreme cases, people may even become suicidal when serotonin levels are low.
Dopamine: As a neurotransmitter, dopamine is also associated with depression. It is important for regulating our desire to seek rewards as well as our ability to experience pleasure. Low dopamine levels mean that a person will not enjoy activities that are normally pleasurable. They become depressed and therefore do not enjoy engaging in otherwise enjoyable activities in life.
Norepinephrine: Low levels of norepinephrine also cause depression in humans. Research shows that decreased norepinephrine levels are associated with lower serotonin levels. It highlights the interaction of neurotransmitters that influence the level of happiness and depression in a person.
Depression treatment treatments aim to restore these chemical imbalances in the brain as a treatment. The depression treatment is quite popular and very successful in the country. Every year, countless people seek treatment for their depressive disorders at numerous depression treatment centers .
“By understanding how different antidepressants affect the 3 monoamine systems of serotonin, nor-epinephrine, and dopamine,” the article, titled “Nerotransmitter Targeting in the Treatment of Depression,” states, “clinicians can select treatments based on the most effective mechanism of action.”
Pierre Blier, MD, Ph.D. The article by further states: “Drugs that increase norepinephrine or dopamine neurotransmission may improve several common residual symptoms after treatment with serotonin-specific agents.”
In short, it’s the right balance of neurotransmitters in the brain that keeps us in high spirits and in the right mindset. Any disturbance can lead to depression or other mental problems in us.
