IELTS – Definition and Its Importance
Are wondering what IELTS is? Do you know its importance in your career or education? If your first language is not English and you are looking to study or move to an English speaking country temporarily for work or permanently to be a resident, then IELTS would be helpful and is actually essential. IELTS or “International English Language Testing System” is an international standardized test of English proficiency and it is mainly managed by the University of Cambridge ESOL, British Council and IDP: IELTS Australia. This examination matches the top form of global standards in the English language proficiency assessment.
There are two types of IELTS exams, the academic training version and the general training version. The academic is obviously for use in studying, most especially for students whose first language is not English and they will be enrolling in an English-speaking university. The academic IELTS would also be very helpful for medical students/practitioners and nurses who want to practice their profession in an English-speaking country such as the US, Canada, UK, Australia or New Zealand. The General training version is given to those who are planning to train for work, gain experience for their career or for purposes of immigration to the countries I mentioned above.
There are four tests which you need to prepare for: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
· Listening – an audio file is played, usually a dialogue or a monologue. They will play it only once so listen carefully, and then while you are listening, you must answer the question on paper so pay attention well. Each student is given time to review their answers after.
· Reading – a student is given a series of three tests with increasing difficulty. Your test will vary, depending on why you are taking the exam (academic or general purposes). You will have 60 minutes to complete this.
· Writing – in this part, you are also given 60 minutes to complete it. There is no particular subject that you will write about but it would also depend if you are taking it for the academic training or the general training.
· Speaking – This will be a 10-15 minute interview type of exam. It is divided into three tests, first is when the examiner will ask you a series of questions, second part is when an individual will speak of a certain topic for about 2-3 minutes, then the last part would be the examiner discussing with the student whatever he or she was talking about on the second part.
If you are enrolling to an English speaking university, having a good IELTS score would be really helpful. Different universities have different minimum requirements on the score so it would be good to look it up. If you are migrating to another country whose first language is English, you should also look up their minimum score requirement. Taking up IELTS on your own for your career would definitely be a plus and it would also be a great addition to your resume. Having a good IELTS score and knowing English would make you more marketable and globally acceptable, as the international language of the business world is English. English would also be the language most used in the World Wide Web and with the age of information, you cannot allow yourself to be left behind by not knowing English.
