Adjectives are words that describe, modify, or qualify a noun or pronoun. An adjective tells us how many, what kind, or which. The italicized words in the sentences below are examples of adjectives.

“Jordan gave his mother a silver bracelet for her birthday.” (How?)

“His shop sold thirty coats.” (How much?)

“Sarah was the eldest of the sisters.” (Which one?)

Adjectives preceded by “more” or “most” can change their form by adding -er or -est. The easiest way to find an adjective is to find the word that describes the noun. Articles are also considered adjectives. There are two different types of articles: definite (the) and indefinite (a, an).

Verbs are words that describe an action (walk, jump, think) or state of being (be, become, appear). A complete verb consists of the main verb as well as any auxiliary verbs that may or may not be used with it. The most commonly used auxiliary verbs are called could, should, would, might, may, will, shall, must, and can. These models express the attitude of the writer to the verb. They give the verb a sense of urgency or obligation. Each verb has five forms, including; base form (walks), past tense (I walked), past tense suffix (I walked), present tense (he/she/it walks) and present tense suffix (i am walking).

Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or another adverb. To find out which words in a sentence are adverbs, ask yourself when, where, how, why, under what circumstances, and to what extent, because the answer to all these questions is actually an adverb. “He walked near his house.” (Where?)

“He walked yesterday morning.” (When?)

Another way to recognize an adverb is to look for words ending in -LY. Most of these adverbs come before the end of the adjective with the ending -LY. Some examples of this are slow (slow), aggressive (aggressive) and desperate (hopeless).

There are four main parts of speech in any good piece of writing. Learning to use them correctly is the best way to ensure that you understand them when you encounter each part when you read or write.
