Do You Really Need a Native English Speaker to Write Quality Web Content

Many people think it only takes a native English speaker to write quality contents that will prompt readers to take action. I believe that hiring a native English writer is a matter of preference and not because they write better content. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I guess many are assuming that writing correct English is the only criterion in this industry. Tell me if you truly need an MA in English to write a paper in Chemistry or Engineering. No way because writing technical subjects require more knowledge of the subject rather than your ability to write proper English.

The purpose of this article is to show that ESL writers can adequately create professional, good quality, and relevant content. While I personally believe that some writers have no business writing professionally, I am convinced that the true location of a writer has no bearing whatsoever in determining his competence. Truth is, some of the most gifted writers in English have ESL backgrounds.

What is a native English speaker?

My instinctive answer is anyone from English speaking countries who learns the language from birth from a native English speaker parent. A person raised in a non-English-speaking country by native-English speaking parents also makes them a native English speaker.

Alternatively, there are plenty of second-generation American whose parents may not have excellent English but are considered native speakers because they grew up in English-speaking countries. Isn’t this a bit tricky? Should there be categories like to grow up exposed to the English language or have English speaking parents.

How about someone whose parents are second-generation immigrants not fluent in their parents original language. Nigeria whose official language is English, and people learned the language from virtual babyhood and have done schooling in English would not describe themselves as native English speakers. In fact, some people who thought they are native speakers would find a terrible language barrier when they go to English-speaking countries because they are incapable of speaking to most people, and many people are unable to understand them.

How about people from the Britain, Australia, and NZ, do their version of English also count as native? If I’m being cheeky, perhaps only British people speak native English as it was the original language. Is it?

Writing quality content

Content writing is a skill and an art like Chess or Martial Arts. You can’t learn them by watching videos from experts. And, like any other skill, you have to practice getting better. Even if, you were born in USA by native English speaker parents and went to the most prestigious Journalism School, that would not make you an expert in content writing. And never think that because you are surrounded by native English Speakers, you would one-day wake up, write some words in your laptop and bam; you’re the next content writing sensation on the Internet. Needless to say, you will have the edge of knowing the language, including the finer things. However, irrespective of whether you are from Pakistan, Indonesia, India, Brazil, or the Philippines, you can become a proficient content writer and exponentially increase your chance

Are there opportunities for ESL writers in this industry?

As audacious as it may sound, yes there are opportunities for ESL writers in this industry. Content writing is a skill, the more you write the better you get, and the more effective you become in communicating with your target audience.

I wonder how ESL speakers managed to reach the English level of native speakers. I have tried my best to study English with considerable enthusiasm for 54 years, and I am still working to reach the real, acceptable level. Maybe I am such a perfectionist about this criterion, but I hardly found ESL speakers who never live in English-speaking countries who can speak and write English that is as good as that of educated native speakers. Then again, this is my opinion.

For the most part, many ESL writers are remarkably qualified in linguistic and academic point of view. They don’t only have opportunities in the content writing industry, but many companies proudly declare that they hire both native speakers and perfectly qualified ESL writers.

It’s essential to know what you do because this is where you can get an edge. Don’t just create a website but manage to create search engine presence. Provide a package and solution instead of product and service.
