International Cultural Exchange (ICE) is commonly understood as people from one country visiting another country to learn about a new culture while showcasing their own culture.

A regular practice with schools and youth organizations around the world is to send a handful of students/youth from their region to another country and let them live with the local locals. Once students start living in a home of a completely different culture, they understand and learn about the new culture. I recently had a friends daughter from Singapore who was selected for ICE and sent to Hong Kong. He had to choose a local family to stay with for a few days. It’s hard to say how much he’ll learn about Hong Kong culture in those two days.

Have you ever heard that you can teach dance to people of different language and country? Well, not many would have the opportunity to hear or see such achievements. A true story of a Dancer from Visakhapatnam, South India.

I have been living in Hong Kong for almost ten years now and have always attended Indian Cultural Events/Festivals, Aarangetrams or dance shows by Indian Dancers and their Indian students. But recently I was surprised to find a young enthusiastic and passionate Kuchipudi dancer working at a popular Yoga center and teaching other forms of Indian dance including Bollywood and Classical Kuchipudi dance.

He is a person full of passion for dance and wanted to do more than what he was given. Hence, he took the initiative to teach traditional Kuchipudi dance at this Yoga center. In the beginning, the students were quite few, but their love and passion for dance rose to new heights and more and more started learning Kuchipudi dance. And today there are more than a hundred students. The most amazing fact is that the students are all Chinese and do not understand or speak the language – the Telugu language of Kuchipudi songs.

To encourage his students to learn more, he started holding shows to perform in the traditional way with all the clothes and jewelry. This amazing, passionate dancer and choreographer is Hari Eranki, popularly addressed as Master Hari Om by all his students. Master Hari Om is one of those rare dance masters who can perform both traditional and modern dances simultaneously. He has trained and taught several dancers in Hong Kong with complete dedication and passion, which can be found in the dancing of all his students, who dance with the best of their souls and to be happy. His students are also now performing at a professional level. Her activities as a dancer, choreographer and dance teacher speak volumes for her talent, love and passion for dance and her students.

Eranki Srihari Baladitya was born to Professors Late E. Nagamamba and ES Murthy who belonged to a family of Musicians and Dancers. Under the skillful guidance of the legendary Guru Sri Pasumarthi Sitaramiah, an exponent of Kuchipudi dance, Hari Om started learning Kuchipudi at the tender age of 3 and started performing at the age of 5. His most prestigious achievements include his involvement in 1994 and 1995. International Kuchipudi Dance Festivals in Mumbai and Hyderabad respectively with dance greats such as Swapna Sundari, Meenakshi Seshadri and others. He also won a scholarship from the Center for Cultural Resources and Training in New Delhi to study Kuchipudi for 8 years. Later, she did Diploma in Kuchipudi dance from Hyderabad Telugu University in 1995.

Hari Om took interest in learning Kuchipudi in various traditions like Pasumarti tradition and Vempaty tradition from Visakhapatnam under Kuchipudi Kalakshetra, Smt. Bala Kondala Rao and Sri Hari Ram Murthy for 3 years. He also learned Bharat Natyam from Sri. A. Rukmaji Rao for several years from 1991 and Andhra Natyam from Sri Nataraj Parameswaran from 1986 and Perini Shiva Tandavam in 1999 in Mridangam from Hyderabad Telugu University. he was very young at 14 when his mother started a School of Music and Dance called Sri Gowthami Kala Vihara.

In 2003, Hari was invited to work at the Yoga Center in Hong Kong, where he became a trendsetter in Kuchipudi, Semi-classical Indian dance and Bollywood styles. Her popularity as a teacher led to other yoga centers offering such dance classes, and all forms of Indian dance are very popular in Hong Kong. Apart from being a trendsetter of Indian dance in Hong Kong, Hari has also established himself among many dance teachers in Hong Kong by presenting several performances and organizing shows. His ability to teach and choreograph both classical and contemporary/Bollywood dance forms with equal finesse has earned him a special place in the hearts of his students.

Chinese students were keen to learn Telugu as it is their Master Hari Om’s mother tongue and Kuchipudi songs are in Telugu. My teaching experience with them has been very enthusiastic and lively and I am proud that within a few lessons they have already started to speak a few words and sentences. It is an amazing experience without words…

Another Classical dancer Master Rajendra R. Nyathi is another famous Teacher in Hong Kong. He is an internationally renowned Artist of Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi and Bollywood dances. He holds a first class Masters in Performing Arts and is a recipient of JRF and National Fellowships for outstanding young artistes by the Government of India. He has served as the Head of the Department of Dance in some well-established Universities in India. He has traveled extensively in Europe, Great Britain, USA, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, China and many Asian countries.

Master Rajendra founded the cultural organization “Natya Yoga” with the desire to serve and promote Indian Classical and other arts to the world. It has also inspired students and audiences of diverse backgrounds and cultures. His dances are soulful, expressive, full of grace, and aesthetically valuable.

As a seasonal harvest festival known as Sankranti in Andhra Pradesh, he started celebrating Sankranti from 2008, where his students perform Classical, semi-classical and other dance forms Choreographed exclusively by him. He has been a wonderful trendsetter for all dancers and also exemplifies International Cultural Exchange. Hong Kong Telugu Samahya is proud of Hari Eranki and Rajendra R. Nyathi, both exceptional Classical Dancers.
