Don’t Misuse the Concept of ‘Acronyms’ and Please Spare Its Usage – An Appeal to Writers

ACRONYMS are words formed from the first letters (usually one, sometimes more) of other words formed from the first letters of the words AIDS and/or LASER, derived from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

1. They should be formed only from the first letters of other words.

2. They must form a complete word. There should be no periods between letters.

3. When writing, all letters must be written in capital letters.

But in practice, this concept is often misused by not following any/all norms of the characteristics of abbreviations. For example, in the sentence “I am an MBBS”, MBBS is not an abbreviation because there are periods between the letters. Likewise, ‘Viscom’ (Visual communication) is not an acronym because the content is not individual letters and is written in lowercase. Neither Rs nor Mike are abbreviations and are only abbreviations.

I want to point out the very rough use of this concept even at the international level.

There is a common saying that NEWS is an acronym for North, East, West and South, which is completely wrong. News is a separate word, meaning new events. Therefore, the question of “Security of our Nation” arises. Obviously they make up some words to accommodate the initials.

Thus Lions clubs are crucifying English words with immature translation. (The author of this article has been an active LION member for twenty years and has spent a significant portion of his savings on social services through LIONS Clubs.)

Some people make their own abbreviations and amplifications. We have often noted such usage in college student elections. Let’s say the contestant’s name is Sita, there is Chosen and S (sincere), I (intelligent), T (Talented), A (Active), etc. there will be placards with the words, as if Sita is an abbreviation of the four words mentioned. What if opponents spelled Dormant, Curious, Tormented, and Adamant?

Therefore, I urge students and scholars of English to stop crucifying the language by abusing the concept of these abbreviations. Abbreviations are used for brevity and clarity. Sometimes they are also used as “secret code”. Let’s not abuse this concept for narrow-minded purposes
