Components Of Body Language
“The body never lies.” ~ Martha Graham
Research has shown that the words we use in face-to-face communication make up only 7% of the message we send when we communicate with others. Surprise! Wow! So what can speak louder than words? The answer is our body language. This is 55% of our message. The tone of voice does the rest. Don’t you think it’s true? Well think again. Let’s say I’m telling a story and you approach me, yawn, close your eyes, shake your head, and walk away. Did you say a word? No. Do I understand what you mean? Yes. You didn’t like my story and found it boring. Amazing! You got your message across without saying a word.
Body language has several components: eye contact, facial expression, body movement, and personal space.
Make eye contact
Eye contact is one of the most important ways we communicate. Just by making eye contact, you can change the way a customer perceives you. When you make good eye contact with a customer, you come across as trustworthy, confident, and knowledgeable. It also shows that you want to listen to what the customer has to say. People who avoid direct eye contact are probably angry, lying, distracted, or simply not interested.
However, don’t overdo it. Don’t look at the customer; you will scare them.
A genuine smile is the best facial expression. Even on days when you feel under the weather, you feel better. With a smile on your face, you appear friendly and approachable. Laughing makes other people feel good too. Smiles are contagious and it’s the best way to put a customer in a good mood and open up.
Sometimes, the customer is upset and angry, so listening to them with a smile on your face will make it worse. Read your customer’s body language and respond accordingly.
The way you deal with a customer says a lot about you: Are you interested in what the customer has to say? Do you care about their problem? Are you happy to see them? Standing up straight, nodding, and giving the customer your full attention shows that you are actively listening. Leaning against a wall, turning your body sideways, and multitasking show that you don’t care.
Hand movements are very important. How many of us have been given the index finger when asked for directions? Doesn’t that feel disrespectful and rude? It’s like you’ve been cornered because of something you did wrong. I recommend open hand gestures that are professional and engaging.
It’s important to focus on the space between yourself and the customer. If the customer moves away, don’t try to get closer, it’s a sign that they want more space to communicate comfortably. In general, a comfortable distance is half a meter to a meter. Keep in mind that what is considered comfortable personal space in one country may be different in another.
Body language is a powerful tool in communication. Understanding and using it correctly will make you successful in business situations and in personal relationships.
