Translating Igbo Names at the Igbozue, Summer Picnic

Instructor Chibuike said God and man are two subjects that attract great respect and honor in Igbo culture. This explains why many Igbo names begin with two prefixes: Chukwu– or chi— [a short form of Chukwu]both God and Nna– meaning biological father or divine figure.

To translate many Igbo names, we only have to replace the word Chukwu or chi with “God” and replace the word Nna with “father”.

Starting with the name Chibuike and continuing with several other examples, the instructor explained, “Chi [God]- this [is]-whom [power] It is translated as “God is powerful”. Chukwu-Emeka [one who has done well]It is another familiar Igbo name that translates as ‘God has done great things for me’.”

In Igbo society, the birth of a male child adds one way to the continuity of family longevity. With the birth of a male child, a flag is passed from father to son, which will continue the family line in a way that is not fully provided for in female children, who tend to identify with her husband and family after marriage.

But unlike Igbo names beginning with God and father, which show strength, power, supplication and fear, names beginning with Nne emphasize the beauty, love, fertility and other cultural characteristics inherent in Igbo women. And as you can imagine, such names are reserved for girls.

Some fantastic Igbo names related to mother include Nne [Mother] oma [pretty]translates as “excellent mother”.

Ezi[perfect]- No[Mother]translates as ‘mother who can do no wrong’ – a symbol of devotion – and Nne[mother]-ka[greatest] peerless mother means one without comparison. Beauty, care, fertility, patience, added to the prefix ‘Nne’ create great female Igbo names.

After listening to the instructor, the children were eager to say and translate Igbo names into English. They were surprisingly determined and successful.

“Continue to learn your Igbo names and words at home from your parents and relatives who speak the language,” said instructor Chibuike as the fifteen-minute session drew to a close.

After the language translation session, the children played soccer while the adults chased bocce balls back and forth. With background music, chili soup, pizza, roasted corn with coconut, fried rice with chicken, grilled hamburgers and hot crispy kpofkpof, beer and wine, the picnic lasted until sunset.
