The Thematic Analysis of The Poem "Do-Gooders" By Olu Obafemi
The poem entitled THE GOOD ONES was written by Olu Obafemi to describe the weaknesses and brutalities of religious men who threaten the lives of people instead of being the last hope of a common man. He tries to condemn the behavior of the religious people who use the position of a human being or a messenger of God to turn a blind eye to the people and exploit them. They use their positions to lie to people and demand exorbitant amounts from them; they deny them their goods and turn the poor (lines 14-17).
The main theme of the poem is CONDEMNATION. Olu Obafemi seeks to expose what is happening in our present environment where people enter church, mosque or palm groves only to escape the growing problem of unemployment. When people finally discover these anomalies of God’s people, they tend to become aggressive. This caused many churches to be abandoned, many mosques to be cursed, and some grooves no longer exist (lines 10-13)
The poet expresses his anger or pain that Terror creates terror, in order to eliminate terror, that is, when such people are caught, they should be tied to a pole and treated like thieves without any mercy. to set fire to (lines 18 and 19). He emphasized that compassion should not be allowed to enter because they have already destroyed many lives; many became wretched creatures with bloated stomachs, smelling like stinking pits, and emaciated (lines 1-5).
The poet ended it with a lament: “Woe to them, to those who betray the name of God, even an endless woe!”
