An Overview of Educational Psychology for Future Teachers

The definition of educational psychology varies, but is often associated with the study of learning in an educational setting or environment. It also deals with theories of learning, theories of teaching, ways to improve teaching effectiveness, and the general psychology of institutions such as schools. There are mainly two types of psychologists in schools or academic institutions in North American countries. Educators involved in research are often known as educational psychologists. On the other hand, when the pedagogue or teacher practice is concerned with the practical application of learning theories, they are referred to as such. educational psychologists. Educational psychology is a broad field of study that includes any of the following areas:

1. Educational Technology

2. Preparation of the curriculum

3. Classroom management

4. Study design

5. Special Education

6. Organizational learning

As a subject, Educational Psychology is often offered as a core subject in teacher education programs. Understanding how students develop their learning skills is critical for every teacher. By doing so, they can plan strategies that will meet the desired learning outcomes. It is also very important for future teachers to understand the nature of human development, because not all children have the same pace of mental, physical and social development. Today’s highly diverse classrooms present many challenges for educators due to cultural and language differences.

There are many fundamental theories presented when studying educational psychology. The various conceptual frameworks of learning theories fall into three major groups: cognitive, behaviorist, and constructivist. Each of these conceptual frameworks has its advantages and disadvantages. Focusing primarily on observable behavior in children, the school adopts behaviorist theory. The main defender of this theory is John Watson. In this framework, learning is measured by observable behavior. Teachers can change a student’s behavior by applying two different types of conditioning – classical or operant conditioning.

Another important theory in educational psychology is constructivism. A constructivist pedagogue believes that students acquire knowledge through active participation, which can be achieved in the form of problem solving. This theory has many applications in the classroom that can help students achieve their learning goals.

Cognitivism is also a popular theoretical framework because it encourages the development of the learner’s mind. For a cognitivist, behavior can be influenced by thought; therefore, it is more valuable to develop cognitive skills such as memorization, problem solving, and reasoning to promote better learning. According to the cognitivist, the mind is like a computer that processes information. Behavior is only a manifestation or by-product of cognitive processes. Although this theory has its critics, it has been useful to many educators over the years. It helped teachers understand why students behaved in certain ways.

Over the years, many learning theories have provided educators, researchers, and school leaders with more opportunities to develop and enhance student academic performance. This makes educational psychology a very interesting subject because learners also evolve as the world around them evolves. Finally, future educators realize the very important role they play in changing the lives of their students.

The best way to become a good teacher is to enroll in a reputable school that offers teaching programs. You can enroll in an undergraduate program specializing in early childhood education or special education. Find a local school in your area and inquire about their program offerings.
