2 Questions Chinese Language Learners Should Ask Themselves
It’s been said many times that Chinese is one of the most difficult languages for English speakers to learn and master, but perhaps that’s the answer to the question we shouldn’t be asking. Instead of focusing on the challenges of learning Chinese, I think it’s more productive to ask two very different questions.
1. Why do Chinese language learners fail?
The number one reason people fail is because they don’t plan. Most people start learning a language using a specific program, and often the language program they choose is a book and a CD. They fully trust the program and take no responsibility for their learning. They don’t set goals, challenge themselves, or create an overall plan because they believe the program will do it for them.
A rare fact about book and CD language programs is that they are not designed to make you fluent. Even if you follow their instructions perfectly and finish all the lessons, you will not speak well. This is a revelation to most people.
Regardless of which program you choose, you must understand from the start that you must take responsibility for your own language learning and go above and beyond the program’s requirements to achieve creative, spontaneous fluency. In practice, this means that you should take the time to speak with someone who speaks Chinese.
2. What do successful Chinese language learners have in common?
All successful Chinese language learners have at least one thing in common – they regularly practice speaking Chinese with a native speaker. This is the bottom line and the truth you need to hear. It is impossible to speak Chinese fluently without constantly speaking, making mistakes and correcting them. Learners of Chinese are especially vulnerable when they don’t speak, because Chinese is not only a tonal language, but also contains a number of sounds that English does not.
If you’re worried about living in a place where there aren’t many Chinese speakers, don’t be. There are now a number of services available online so that language learners can help each other. This is called “language exchange”. You can take a short English lesson and have a native Chinese speaker help you with pronunciation and grammar. Before long, you’ll discover that you’re having a very comfortable conversation – in Chinese!
Every successful learner of Chinese, whether online or somewhere in Asia, has gone through this process. Make sure you find the courage and opportunity to start talking as soon as possible.
Most people who start learning Chinese will fail. This is not because Chinese is a difficult language to learn, and it is not because these people are weak or stupid. Anyone can learn Chinese, but some people don’t prepare themselves and take the right steps to guarantee they’ll pass. By planning your success and speaking as much as possible, make sure you are one of those Chinese learners who will make it.
