The ISEE – What to Expect on the ISEE

The Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) is administered by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB). It is used as a component in the admission process of many private schools. The test has three levels. Lower Level is for students entering fifth or sixth grade; Intermediate Level is for students entering seventh or eighth grade; finally, Upper Level is for students moving from ninth to twelfth grade. Each level tests students’ knowledge in four areas: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, math achievement, and essay writing. Although the format of each test is the same, the material covered in higher level tests will necessarily be more difficult than in lower levels. This article will discuss the material found on the test, what to expect on test day, how to prepare, and how to interpret an ISEE score.

The Verbal Reasoning section of the ISEE consists of three types of items: synonyms, one-word sentence completion, and phrasal sentence completion. The next section, quantitative reasoning, consists essentially of logic problems. Arithmetic calculations may not be required. In the reading comprehension section, students are asked to read a passage, then identify main and supporting ideas, make inferences from the text, identify words based on context, determine the organization and logic of the passage, tone of voice, style, and figurative language such as personification and irony. Finally, the math achievement section tests students on grade-appropriate math—generally, problems include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, measurement, and probability. Finally, the essay is inquiry-based and not graded, but is sent to the school to which the student is applying.

Students should be aware of the structure of the mock exam. Each section is timed. Timings for Lower, Middle and Upper Levels vary, so parents should check the ERB website for relevant information. All tests include two five-minute breaks for students during the exam. On the day of the exam, students must bring four No. 2 pencils and two black or blue ink pens (erasable ink is allowed). Most other items are not permitted, including scraps of paper, calculators, and reference materials. Mobile phones and other electronic devices are strictly prohibited and may not be taken into the examination room.

Preparation is essential to success on the ISEE. ERB does not recommend preparing students for levels they do not accept (ie, teaching fifth grade material from the Advanced Placement test). The ERB website has an official guide to help students prepare for the ISEE. If your student needs additional help, you should consider an ISEE exam preparation program to strengthen your student’s knowledge and confidence in their skills before the exam. A test prep program will help your student learn test-taking strategies and apply them to practice tests, ideally tests that accurately reflect the time constraints and other constraints of the real exam. Taking the ISEE can be stressful for a student, and preparation will help them get the most out of it.
