When To Use Solo Vs Solamente in Spanish

In today’s Spanish grammar lesson, we will not only look at solo vs. We will not only talk about when to use solamente, but also the differences between “solo”, “sólo” and “solamente” in Spanish. This seems to be a topic that confuses many Spanish learners. In fact, when I first started learning Spanish, it was a topic that often confused me. I asked many of my Spanish speaking friends for help and none of them could help me. I even asked my Spanish teacher and her explanation confused me even more. Finally, I not only understand the differences between “solo”, “sólo” and “solamente” in Spanish, but I can also explain the topic to others who are learning to speak Spanish.

To begin with, “sólo”, (note the accent on the first “o”) and “solamente” are “adverbios”.

(adverbs). “Sólo” and “solamente” are interchangeable and both mean “alone”. For example:

Only faltan dos semanas for free time.

(There are only two weeks until the holidays start.)

Yo tengo ocho hermanos y ella solamente dos.

(I have eight brothers and he has only two.)

On the other hand, “solo/a”, (note that there is no accent on the first letter

“it”) is “adjetivo” (adjective). “Solo/a'” cannot be replaced by “sólo” and “solamente”.

Solo/a means single or alone. For example:

Only solo is checked for rush.

I want to be alone so I can read without distraction.

Remember that the adjective “solo” can be masculine or feminine:

solo or left. But the adverb “sólo” (or “solamente”) has only one form. Check out these examples:

Yo vivo solo/a.

I live alone.

For vivo solo (solamente).

I live only for you.

Vivo solo/a port ti.

I live alone because of you.

Of course, in regular conversation you won’t notice the accent on “sólo” or the lack of an accent on “solo”. So you’ll have to rely on the context of the conversation to determine which one the speaker intended to use. An example using both solo and solo:

Yo tomo solo, solo cuando estoy deprimido.”

I only drink when I’m depressed.

I hope this clears up any confusion about when to use the words “solo”, “sólo” and “solamente” in Spanish.
