Teaching English in Mexico: English Language Teaching in Cancun Part 3
CANCUN AFFAIRS:
There are more job opportunities here…
In our last posts, we talked about language schools and institutes. In this article, bilingual schools, Preschools, Elementary, Middle, and Preparatory schools emphasize English in their programs and are strictly seeking native English teachers for English and other classes. A significant number of them are due to the influence of tourism as the main field industry. So polish your CV, apostille your diplomas and get in right away.
Materno, Kinder and Primary schools:
All of these schools have students only in kindergarten through elementary school—usually around fifth grade (age 10 or 11). English is central to their curriculum, and experienced, native-speaking teachers have a really high chance of being hired. Although salary is generally commensurate with experience, some adjustments and “bonuses” are possible. Additional tutoring work is also available for private students, parents and family members. Most schools are quite small and have a maximum of 40-100 students. The facilities vary slightly, but are generally pretty good by Mexican standards. Call, fax, email, mail or write for the latest details and openings before making an appointment.

Grade levels range from Kindergarten and Preschool to Elementary, with some English taught at ALL levels. They definitely need some experienced teachers, but they prefer bilingual teachers because virtually all the staff are Mexicans who don’t speak English.

Kindergarten (ages 3-4), kindergarten (ages 5-6), and preschool (ages 6-9) attend this Spanish-English bilingual school. There are two locations and teachers can work in either or both depending on the levels they are assigned to teach. Experienced teachers are preferred, but an adjunct or adjunct position is possible for somewhat inexperienced but enthusiastic and dynamic applicants.

Billing itself as a 100% bilingual school (Spanish-English), the students here range from kindergarten through high school. This creates ample opportunities for native English teachers not only in English, but in other subject areas as well. If you have a broad base in another subject, you can apply to teach that subject in English in addition to English lessons. This option will make you more valuable to the school and greatly increase your chances of being hired. So be sure to prepare your resume and background materials accordingly to include everything from anthropology to woodshop. You never know what might come in handy.

This school is hardworking. Its preschool is bilingual (Spanish-English), high school students are trilingual, and college preparatory students must be at least bilingual (usually Spanish-English). The possibilities here are amazing. The staff is multilingual, so you will most likely be interviewed in English, but make sure you brush up on your Spanish as well. Remember that students here are bilingual or trilingual. Now you wouldn’t want to look like a “drunk”! Be dynamic. Be open. Be flexible and if you have a little patience, you’ll probably have a chance to get something here.
