Teaching English in Mexico: How About the Northern States? Part 1

The Northern region of Mexico has a variety of jobs. Its proximity to the US border makes it attractive to some English teachers. The scorching heat of summer drives others away. The region will give you some choice and latitude as to where you want to “shake and bake,” as some locals say. I will try to provide some suggestions for hotels and restaurants for these areas in another article. So let’s get started:

Uninino

Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico and Douglas, Arizona, USA

Contact: Anne Scott

Uninino has a position for an enthusiastic primary school teacher. We are located in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico, directly across the border from Douglas, Arizona. The city has a population of 100,000. Many people have the misconception that because Agua Prieta is a border town, they won’t get the Mexican Experience. This is not true. Agua Prieta is very much a Mexican city. We don’t even have McDonalds. The new teacher should arrive in Aqua Prieta no later than the end of August. Salary 500 USD. The apartment is shared with two foreign teachers. Working hours are from 7:30 to 15:30. You get two weeks off at Christmas and Easter, along with all Mexican holidays. These are paid. Requirements include at least one year of teaching experience in a foreign environment, TESOL certification, college degree in any discipline, passion for children, great patience, age 25 or older, and willingness to commit to a year.

It is a private language school in a medium-sized city on the northwest coast of Mexico. The school was established twelve years ago because of the great demand for English language classes. English courses are held at the school from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Every year we contact two teachers from the USA. Foreign teachers only teach older students. The number of students in classes is ideal. For a language class, there are five to twelve students per class. Each teacher has his own class and is responsible for planning lessons. A week before the start of classes, a mandatory and free one-week training course is provided for teachers. The school provides accommodation and teachers are entitled to three hours of free Spanish lessons per week.

Qualifications include people with a passion for teaching. The position requires strength in spoken and written English, patience to explain grammar and the ability to work well in hot climates (classrooms are air-conditioned). They prefer someone with teaching experience. Training: 30 hours of lessons per week. Three hours a week of free training in Spanish. Two positions are available. To apply: Fax or email your resume, a cover letter describing your qualifications and interest in the position, and a work reference. The application deadline for each academic year is usually in May. Living expenses are covered by the school.
