Speaking In Tongues – ABC’s Nightline Gives ‘Em Somethin’ To Talk about

It’s a topic that fascinates people everywhere. Even people in the media, like ABC’s Nightline.

Some say it’s from God, some say it’s from the devil. A Nazarene preacher told me that when he was preparing to teach about the gifts of the Spirit, he did not know how to handle the gift of tongues. “My sect doesn’t believe in that… personally, I’m not so sure.”

One day a woman from the Church of Christ called me and said she wanted the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. We dropped everything to meet him in the middle of the day. Although he doesn’t speak in tongues — yet, anyway — he says he feels like a double espresso and a B-12 shot.

Another woman who was raised as a Baptist recently asked for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. He had never heard of the Spirit “coming” upon an individual as Jesus Himself had done. Again, even though he says he doesn’t pray in tongues and the Earth doesn’t move, his level of courage has grown radically. He prays with a power and authority he never had before.

On air!

A recent ABC Nightline presentation was on Speaking in Tongues. I was impressed that the experience was not demeaned, mocked, or frowned upon. The only comment they made on the spiritual gift itself was this less derogatory note: “The origin of the operation is believed to be the miracle of Pentecost – as told in the New Testament book of Acts – when the apostles of Jesus were said to be filled with the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues to themselves. And the gifted few he is said to have done this in the early Christian congregations. St. Paul called it “speaking in the tongues of angels. But it was viewed with confusion by many other Christian denominations. And to outsiders, it can seem downright strange.”

Even the minister they chose to interview, Pastor Gerry Stoltzfoos, an Amish-raised man, was a good Christian representative—articulate, intelligent, and personable. The piece was not presented as a snake-handling cult where members have more tattoos than fangs. In fact, the people they interviewed were decent, normal looking and acting (whatever “normal” is these days).

One of the most interesting aspects of the segment was when they introduced the audience to the scientific work of Dr. Andrew Newberg of the University of Pennsylvania. The narrator states, “Newberg is committed to unraveling the relationship between faith and science by examining what happens in the brain during the deepest moments of faith. He recently published a study examining the brain activity of eight Americans who spoke in tongues.”

“If we really want to look at this powerful force in the history of religion and spirituality in human history, I think we have to really look at how it affects our brains—what changes or turns on and off in our brains,” Newberg said. .

Newberg was asked if he was skeptical of what he would find if he decided to study the brain when a person spoke in tongues. He replied, “If…the question is, is this a real phenomenon? Is it really the voice of God speaking through them? I think that’s a more problematic question, and I’m not sure if we have a specific answer just by doing our research.” gave.”

Newberg performed computer tomography to see what happens in the control center of the brain when speaking in languages. Donna Morgan, a study participant, said, “When I heard about the study, I already knew in my gut that it would be proven that there is a part of our brain that we have no control over. [over],” he said, “When the Holy Spirit intercedes for us, we get out of control.”

Newberg had previously studied brain scans of meditating Buddhist monks and praying Franciscan monks. The results were quite different from what he had observed in the brains of language speakers. Language-speaking brains are silenced in the frontal lobe, the part of the brain behind the forehead that is considered the brain’s control center.

“When they’re really engaged in all this very intense spiritual practice … their frontal lobes tend to activate. … It’s very consistent with the type of experience they have, because they say they’re not in charge. [They say] it’s the voice of God, the spirit of God moving through them,” Newberg said.

“Not everything that comes out of their mouths is purposeful or what they’re trying to do. And that’s quite different from people who pray, like Buddhist and Franciscan nuns, because they’re very focused. The frontal lobes of these individuals really increase activity.”

Pastor Stoltzfoos himself did not hesitate to agree to participate in the study. “I don’t think faith has anything to fear from science. Science validates faith, so bring it, whatever the facts are, do it… you don’t care what other people think. It’s personal. First of all, it’s with you and God.” something in between,” Stoltzfoos said. “…we don’t care if it’s confirmed or not, but it’s amazing when it is…”

YOU WILL GET THE POWER!

I was pleased with the secular media’s handling of this issue. I couldn’t help but wonder what the world was saying when the people came out of the Upper Room, spoke in tongues, and were heard in public for the first time. Millions heard the same thing that night via Nightline.

When it comes to speaking a language, let’s never forget that mastering it is neither a badge of achievement nor something to be proud of. The Bible shows that Jesus said to His disciples: “…When the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will receive POWER (ability, efficiency and power) and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria. ends (boundaries) of the earth” (Acts 1:8 AMP). The Greek word for “power” used here is “dunamis,” from which the word “dynamite” is derived.

Power? Power to do what? The verse informs us to be his witnesses. Martyrs comes from the Greek word “martus” from which we get our English word “martyr”. Although some Christians have literally lost their lives for their faith, ALL true believers are expected to lay down their lives for Christ’s Commandment. We must decrease so that He may increase.

I have heard many non-Christians talk about why they tried one religion or another, Satanism, or no religion at all. When you read between the lines, all they’re really looking for is the strength to live life successfully and the strength to stop causing so much collateral damage all the time, they seem to have no control over their own lives. Christ suggests that “DY-NO-MITE!” power belongs to all who come after Him.

I myself speak in tongues and do my best to prevent the enemy from using it as a means of division. I am often alone when I do this, and God is often gracious enough to comment on these statements. Many of these messages I have written since 1999 are the result of inspiration from God while praying in tongues. I believe that many Christians do not pray in tongues because of the spiritual environment they are in. It’s the same reason we don’t see the same number of glorious healings as other parts of the world. On the Faith-O-Meter, we’re a few quarts down in the Western world! Some of us grew up hearing that all spiritual gifts died with the death of the last apostle. Others were taught that tongues were demonic. Others can’t bear the thought of appearing foolish, or perhaps appearing as “drunk” as others assume. Others are so concerned that “they” and not God may be speaking that they don’t step out on the water and test it.

Some have told me that if there is going to be a “Charismatic Flame” at the conference, we should mention it in our promotional material. Should a speaker in tongues wear a bright orange shirt that “WARNS” others that they may experience a “Charismatic Flare” at any moment? Maybe he doesn’t speak in tongues. God gave him the Word of knowledge, the Word of Wisdom, a vision, a dream, a prophetic word, etc. can give Perhaps the leaders of each church should provide such individuals with an adhesive lapel sticker with a capital “C” on it. he

Seriously, lest the gift of tongues become the basis of some ungodly caste system in the Church – those who do and those who DON’T – let’s remember that the Gifts of the Spirit aside, it is LOVE that we all have. be known (Gal. 5:22). THIS is the gift the world needs to see manifested through all of us – proof that God is with us!
