ESL Teacher Textbook Review – The Oxford Picture Dictionary
If you’re an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher looking for the perfect textbook for teaching vocabulary to your students, then you’ll love The Oxford Picture Dictionary (English with Text). This tutorial is perfect for any ESL student and any ESL teacher. It can be used by students of all levels and contains important English words or vocabulary. We use this book at our ESL school, the Hawaiian Literacy Drop In Center, because it can be used with any level of student. As long as a student learns the basic ABCs and basics of reading in English, he can learn from it effectively.
To understand the amazing adaptability of this ESL textbook, I will discuss in a little more detail how it is used in our school. The Drop-In Center is a free ESL school for Hawaii’s local immigrant community, so student attendance is not consistent. Students are free to come and go and therefore it is difficult to have a traditional lesson plan structure. In addition, since the school is mostly run by volunteers, there are often not enough ESL teachers to divide the students into different levels.
The Oxford Picture Dictionary offers many advantages for us:

2) Students and ESL teachers can start from any page at any time (so new students won’t feel like they’re falling behind the class).
3) The pictures can be understood even if the student has a very minimal knowledge of English.
4) Students of all levels find the book useful and engaging.
5) Teacher’s manuals and workbooks are excellent and make teaching and learning much easier.
6) Inexpensive for most students (around $17)
Of course, despite these many advantages, the book is a reference book…a picture dictionary. Therefore, to make it interesting for students, the ESL teacher must integrate it into an effective classroom experience.
For my class, I usually use a Teacher’s Guide that already contains ready-made dialogue examples, lists of spelling sentences, discussion questions, related vocabulary, and other suggested activities. I may give a quiz or two to check students’ understanding.
