Utility of English in Free India
Despite having a history of centuries of foreign domination, Hindi has stood the test of time and circumstances. The British entered the borders of India with the British ruling India for more than a century. During that period, the British saw the English language penetrating the roots of Indian education.
But the debate about whether English was useful or not useful in India arose with the departure of the British and the advent of the Indian regime. The need to continue English in our education system has been questioned. People believed, and quite rightly so, that the continuation of the English language at least indicated our acceptance of the mental servitude of the outgoing regime. This prejudice against language propagation and perpetuation has been brewing for a long time. It is the language of our foreign rulers and therefore people feel that it is reminiscent of our slavery and therefore should be abandoned.
Further, the claim of the Anti-English lobby is that even the Constitution says that English can continue in India only for “official purposes” and that too, only for a period of 15 years. the commencement of the constitution.
The anti-British reaction is certainly very natural, but not very rational. Because, on the one hand, an independent country should have its own language, since India is a multilingual country, it cannot press for any language to be the national language. Introducing one on the national stage becomes an emotional issue and the project should be shelved. Under these circumstances, even if we do not work for the further spread of English, we cannot exclude it from the Indian scenario. Apparently, English will never lose its importance in India or anywhere in the world.
As far as education through English is concerned, this may be reconsidered. Because most of the population in India lives in rural areas, it would be easier for them to impart knowledge in their mother tongue than English, which is a foreign medium of instruction. There is no doubt that the language of instruction is English, the local vernacular has remained at a low level of development, and even the culture has suffered severe blows. This is because language becomes a living embodiment of attitudes and beliefs as well as a way of conveying ideas. Thus, the study of English, embodied by English authors, has inculcated upon us English views of life that pose a threat to our cultural heritage.
Learning English weakens our national structure, what can a nation without its own national language be proud of? It is truly humiliating that a country should care so much about a foreign language and also the language of its foreign rulers.
But the downside isn’t the only thing to consider. There is no doubt that there is a great reason for us to continue learning English. First of all, there is currently no language that can hold the position of a national language. Although English is known all over the country, as per today’s situation, we can say that even if we don’t want to, English has replaced at least one contact language more than any other Indian language. So, we cannot think of giving up this language. At present, we can see it as the strongest bond for our national integration.
Let’s take a look at the richness of the English language. It is a rich language with thousands of new words added every year. Unlike our traditional Sanskrit language which is completely dormant today, this language is alive.
In addition to the richness of the language, it is a great repository of knowledge. In these days of scientific and technological progress, we cannot stay out of the field of advanced research. All this is only available in English. So, if we want to guide the country towards modern knowledge and progress, we cannot do without English language. If we do not improve our knowledge of English, we cannot hope to participate in any international meeting, because it is the only language used and understood by the majority of countries in the world. If there is one thing that has made India progress, it is the entry of educated India into the stream of modern life, and one would not dare to say that Indians have achieved this by learning the language. Even Mahatma Gandhi once said: “I consider the English language an open window to look at Western thought and science. Therefore, the study of the English language can lead us to new worlds of thought and feeling, make our outlook scientific, rational and modern.” So, it feels like there is no harm in getting the best of anyone.
There are so many languages in India and every individual is emotionally attached to their own language, then what will be the consensus in coming up with a National language? So it is rightly felt that English can continue to be our language until Hindi takes its place and becomes the national language. English must continue to be the language of communication across the length and breadth of this subcontinent. It should also be a teaching tool in all educational institutions so that students are educated on the latest trends in science and technology.
Let’s forget emotions and be more practical and use English as long as we need to make Hindi a national language. We need to stop the propaganda against the English language and realize all the benefits we have and will see from learning this language.
