Teaching Business English With "Risk & Reward"

Any English teacher knows the value of using casual play in the English classroom. Play is often a welcome change from grammar lessons, short readings, writing practice, and fictional speaking situations. Students are more relaxed and focus more on the difficulty of the game than on the English language. But to solve these problems, the practice of speaking English—whether it’s learning the rules of the game or actually playing the game—is the most important thing for these learners. They practice English while they have something else to think about (i.e. the game).

Risk & Reward is a business game for business and technical English learners. The class is divided into teams of two to four students each. Teams will compete against each other to see who can better manage business risk.

Each team is given some money to start investing. Each turn, the team is given four possible investments, each with its own risk and reward profile. Some investments are quite safe but have low returns. Other investments are very profitable but risky. Some investments are a good balance between profit and safety. And some investments are not good investments at all. The team will use English to discuss the four investments and select the best one.

The team then calls the instructor and draws a random number from a set of cards. The card determines whether the investment is successful or not. Otherwise, the team moves on to the next turn and is given another set of four investments.

If successful, the team enters the awarded cash flow into the ledger. This book chronicles their investments throughout the game. Most business people will find this manual quite easy to understand: the English that explains it will be their difficulty. The instructor’s manual has a very detailed explanation of how to use this manual.

Entering numbers should be done under the supervision of an instructor or designated assistant. The team and assistant will use the English language to adapt the legal amount of the team to the rules and the profile of the successful investment.

Some learners will already have received financial education and will understandably want to do some financial calculations to make their own decisions. When the instructor hears words like “discount rate” and “present value,” he should pull out a one-page financial analysis sheet with all the relevant financial calculations already completed. With this sheet, learners can focus on English conversation rather than work calculations.

The game is designed so that not all teams are on the same turn. Some discussions will be long; some will be short; Successful investments will take longer to process than unsuccessful investments. That is, each team goes at its own pace. Also, working with this formula creates another unique opportunity for “number English” practice.
