Technology And Leaders Who Understand It

Leadership, as I often like to say, is the number one factor in organizational success. Even if everything else is set up to work, be effective, and be efficient, a bad leader can destroy all advantages, natural or contrived. Now we talk about the big three things that drive organizations: People, Process and Technology, and leadership is clearly in the first category.

My own company relies heavily on technology for its results and success. To be honest, even 15 years ago, it would have been difficult to imagine how my company could function and function without the remarkable technological innovations of the last twenty years. Do I love technology? You bet! However, I also feel that technology is too widely accepted without the scrutiny and critical analysis that is properly relevant to the function of a leader (or the function a leader is tasked with and should be). In other words: there are at least three major problems with technology that leaders – in their rush to succeed – conveniently ignore, and I’d like to outline them here.

First, this technology has a frightening habit of sponsoring co-dependency and ultimately slavery. We see it on the street or on the train: men and women who can’t stop barking at their cell phones; and wherever they are, including those who can’t stop accessing their email on family social networks. The great French writer Proust miraculously foresaw this back in the late nineteenth century when a friend asked him to buy a telephone and Proust asked what it was. The friend patiently explained – it sat on your wall, it rang, you picked it up, you spoke to someone miles away. But it was enough for Proust to know that it was ringing – “I am its servant!” he shouted. Servants were summoned when the bells rang. He had no intention of being a servant to the bell that tolled on his wall; he perceived a fundamental violation of his freedom inherent in the very concept of the telephone.

Which leads to the second point: the law of unintended consequences. We see technology as the solution; but there always appears to be a deeper problem accompanying the solution. After all, only thirty years ago new technology was supposed to liberate us; We would only work 2 or 3 day weeks as technology and robots took the strain away. (It’s not talked about much now, but is there? – all conveniently on the shelf). But, of course, the opposite happened. Now, with all this abundance of technology, both partners have to work, working hours are massively extended, in some sectors Sundays or days off or rest are almost non-existent and so on. The technology that freed us enslaved us (and, given the state of the Earth, did other things as well). What does the boss say about it?

Finally, technology has subtly led to a belief system that is almost false: the belief in “progress” and utopia. Around the corner, people will live to be 150 years old, cancer will be cured a little earlier, there will be a better world where everyone can chat on Facebook and they won’t need to fight anymore. Yes, just around the corner. As I said before, this belief has been around for two hundred years, and it is a “belief” – in the sense that it has no more substance than a dream. In many ways, the twentieth century was the most terrifying century in world history—hard to imagine now from the comfort of our Western armchairs—and technology played a role in making it so terrifying: The World’s Weapons. WWI, WWII gas chambers, atomic bombs, napalm, etc.

Thus, leadership consists of discrimination: discrimination of ideas; not to accept prevailing wisdom and modern thought that passes for thought but is magazine fodder; bit by bit (and we can say byte by byte) to challenge the powers of orthodoxy that enslaves the world. We need leaders who use technology to empower people. And so we return to the fundamental distinction that many who see technology as an unlimited “good” ignore: technology is good when it truly serves the interests of all people, and technology is bad when it does the opposite—dictators, plutocrats. , oligarchs, ego driven CEO’s and MD’s use it to exploit people’s last money.

We need leaders who understand this.
