Children Learning Music – Advice For Parents

*Parents are the key to success – Parents are undoubtedly the greatest teachers of all. Any teacher knows that without parents, even our best efforts have little effect. We understand this very well, so we’ve created this page to help you as a parent understand what your kids need to do to succeed on the guitar.

*Make exercise a habit – By giving your kids (especially younger kids) the choice to exercise, they will usually choose not to. In most cases, actual practice is tedious and boring work, but necessary. Think of learning music like learning to sing. The early stages require concentration and are not particularly pleasant. If young children were given a choice, they would probably choose to watch TV and never learn to read. But they will regret it later. The fact is that most parents work hard to teach their children to read and write. Music is no different. If you are serious about your child’s music learning, we encourage you to attend. The first year is when they need you the most. Children don’t have the wisdom of adults, and leaving them to choose what, when, and how to exercise is more likely to result in them giving up. Overworked children will make exercise a habit. In almost every situation where a child learns to play the guitar, there is a very supportive parent behind the scenes.

*What do they need? – Junior students will mainly work from two sources;

*What should I know as a parent about G4GUITARMETHOD? – They have a Checklist in front of their folder. (open their folder and this should be the first page you see). This checklist will list all the requirements for the current level. As the student progresses, boxes will be checked to indicate that they have successfully performed a particular skill or song. Basically the focus of their practice should be where the box is ticked. The teacher will sometimes write comments in the section below. Parents should check it every week. Once all the boxes are ticked, they will receive a certificate and move on to the next level.

*So how can I help them with their experience? – Set aside some time each week to see what they have learned. Ask your child exactly what they are working on. The best time to ask is right after class. If you ask them regularly, they will pay more attention in class knowing that questions are coming. Try to understand it yourself. Better yet, try learning the guitar yourself. We also have classes for adults, so don’t hesitate to sign up.

* Performance – Set special dates for your child to perform their latest piece for family or friends. Once a period (4 times a year) would be fine. There is something to work with this way. Make sure you reward them in some way.

*Inducements – It is important to understand the difference between inducements and blackmail. Blackmail is forcing someone to do something that only serves you. Encouragement is a positive way to encourage the person in question to reach their potential. Using incentives with children helps them discover that experience has its own rewards. Instead of just taking your kids to a movie or buying them a PlayStation game, use them as motivation.

*Starting at a young age 5-7 years old- Emphasis is more on fun for young children to create a positive connection with the guitar. Learning the guitar requires the development of fine motor skills, auditory awareness (listening) and comprehension. Fine motor skills for the guitar develop more slowly in young children, but the work they do at this age pays off later. These skills are the same as learning to speak, read and write a language. Their development should be expected to be approximately the same. If your child practices writing for 10 minutes a day, you will see a gradual improvement over time. Children develop speech faster because they practice spoken language more than reading or writing. It’s just a matter of experience. We wouldn’t expect a 5-year-old to write a novel, but we do expect them to communicate at a reasonable level. The early years are essentially about building a foundation and establishing the habit of practice. Don’t expect too much, just encourage and be aware of the time they put into their practice.

*Listening – The music your children listen to plays a huge role in their learning. If you want your child to appreciate and eventually become a passionate guitar player, you need to expose them to guitar music. Give them 30 minutes of music a day instead of 2 hours of TV or computer. Eric Clapton, Santana, The Beatles, Green Day and more. Most libraries have good CDs. Especially the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Also try renting a DVD of the concert instead of the movie. Check out the “School of Rock” DVD. *Guitar fitness – Learning guitar is often confused with playing guitar. Many people decide to buy a guitar because they think it will be fun. They focus on playing the guitar. Learning guitar isn’t particularly fun. Playing guitar is fun. Playing the guitar is one of the most beautiful feelings anyone can experience. But learning guitar is HARD WORK. Like fitness. Getting fit is hard work. It feels great to be fit. But it gets easier as you get better. Young children need lots of support and parental involvement. Try to sit with them and watch them while they practice. Pay close attention to what they do. A must for children under 10.
