COMBATIVES – A Rose by Any Other Name, Part 2

The advent of World War I (the war to end all wars) ushered warfare into a new and era of carnage and carnage. Air power, mechanized warfare, chemical warfare, and the general use of machine guns have almost completely changed the face of warfare. However, one fact remained that in the end it was STILL MAN against man in a desperate, brutal and deadly struggle for survival. The static and stagnant lines created by entrenched warfare required new and innovative tactics and strategies. Among them was the emergence of “raiding” parties. Small groups of lightly armed men who went out into “no man’s land” on missions of reconnaissance, reconnaissance, reconnaissance, prisoner-taking, and psychological “moralization.” Under these conditions, the nature of the battle became known as “trench warfare”. It was a hand-to-hand knife fight. All kinds of expedient, targeted and improvised close combat weapons were used. While technological advances were made in all other forms of warfare, this particularly hideous and brutal human combatant reverted to the most barbaric, primitive and bloody “methods” imaginable. As it WILL be from the time Cain kills Abel until the last two humans clench their fists in rage or grab the stones during the final battle of the Apocalypse.

Because of this, most military forces have researched, developed, and implemented fairly comprehensive and rigorous training methods specific to close combat and trench warfare. The bayonet, knife (especially the trench knife), and hand-to-hand combat became basic training doctrines, along with advances in general physical fitness and combat training. Unarmed hand-to-hand techniques are drawn from ANY and ALL sources of man-to-man combat. Boxing, wrestling, Savate, jiujitsu and any number of “rough and tumble” carving and kicking tactics were used. Those tasked with developing such training programs knew full well that NO “approach” to combat would be SUFFICIENT in a REAL human being to kill a man or kill him in combat!

Punching, kicking, striking, beating, stomping, biting, gouging, throwing, choking, strangling, strangling, breaking bones, and using ANY and ALL melee weapons is BACK! The above should satisfy and fulfill anyone’s “definition” of MIXED combat tactics and techniques (even if Muay Thai or more accurately Siamese boxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are not included). To be honest, I have books in English from around the late 1920’s to early 1930’s that detail Siamese boxing very well. Also, one textbook details the “favorite” attacks of Siamese boxers, grabbing the hair with one hand and delivering brutal throat-splitting kicks to the liver and throat with the other (no gloves, this time). A liver attack was fatal in many cases because even if you survived it was a widespread malaria epidemic that made the spleen swell and swell and make it the center of a fatal attack. DEATHS occurred DAILY in these matches and were considered a mere routine hazard of the “trade”.

The years after World War I saw the rise of self-defense “systems” designed and “marketed” for the average citizen. Law enforcement agencies also began to pay more attention to this area of training. It was just a part of the movement to increase the professionalism of law enforcement personnel in general. Almost all of these “systems” advocated a thoroughly well-balanced approach to personal combat. Elements of boxing, wrestling, foot-fighting and jiu-jitsu have become quite popular as a “mixed” toolbox of personal defense tactics. Even methods based primarily on western boxing and wrestling maneuvers recognized that a well-formed fighter must be able to BOTH strike effectively and grapple. He advocated jiu-jitsu, which was fairly comprehensive in its program of punches, strikes, kicks, and other techniques that presented personal attack and defense as the only answer. WE would do well to remember here that despite all the “talk” about Fairbairn, the Shanghai Municipal Police academy trained recruits in BOXING – WRESTLING and JIU-JITSU during this time! OR as one SMP veteran said…………………….”our training in this area was a MIXED BAG of physical skills”!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

There was virtually no “authority” or “expert” in the field who found the “MIX” of striking/kicking and grappling either as a combined “method” or alone as in “real” Japanese jiu-jitsu. When it was “for all marbles” NOBODY would be so far-sighted as to deny EVERY possible attack and defense. As for “Liveliness” training, the jiu-jitsu (NOT Kodokan Judo) “free training” of this era allowed for virtually ANYTHING. Testicles, base of skull, etc. including atemi to almost ALL Kyusho points. The only “advice” offered was DO NOT HIT HARD TO KILL your training partner, SAVE that for “matches” against OTHER jiu-jitsu schools!

By pitting each other against each other ONLY in the sports fighting arena, this method division has become somewhat of a popular past. Wrestlers vs. boxers, both vs. jiu-jitsu men, or Savate fighters vs. boxers (Biddle fought such a match while in Paris) were conducted under an ever-changing set of rules that became virtually impossible to determine. which “method” was superior, and even then, as some sportswriters of the time pointed out, when NO RULES APPLIED, what did EACH have to do with a REAL fight. Even Jigoro Kano’s nephew was involved in promoting such matches between western boxers and local Japanese judokas. They were called “JU (as in Judo/Jujutsu) – KEN/KENTO (as in fist or fist fighting)”. Even when Choki Motobu was asked if his Kempo-Karate was “superior” to boxing (after KOing a western-style pugilist), he said that his “method” was to use special preparation for this type of match against a boxer. should be implemented. A judoka interested in these JU-KENTO fights looked for a SPECIFIC instruction on HOW to make Judo work against boxing. In the early 1930s, a whole book was published in Japan on this topic. It is very important to remember that ALL of these battles have strict engagement rules and regulations! If any of these mandates could have a huge impact on what a real pier-6 can do in a back alley fight. As an example: Judoka were almost ALWAYS prohibited from using any of the ATEMIWAZA techniques (striking, punching, kicking, knocking, and crushing). However, judo “experts” of the time often and in their writings advocated that ATEMI would be the most preferred form of attack and defense in serious combat.

The bottom line here is simply this: NO ONE, but a total Idiot, would suggest an attitude or method for use in a REAL violent attack that approaches anything less than ALL’s “anything goes” doctrine. As far as “sports fighting” is concerned, nothing has been or can be conclusively proven to be superior to anything else. EACH of these various “methods” have had huge and impressive WINS and equally impressive SUCCESSES in the past.

In the next part, we will look at the period of World War II and define the true meaning of the term “fighters”……………..
