Teaching the Difference Between MAKE and DO to English Language Learners
Distinguish between “Make” and “Do”.
Learners of English as a first language or those whose L1 is Spanish can have considerable difficulty distinguishing when to use ‘make’ and when to use ‘do’. Why? This is because, for example, in Spanish, the same verb “hajer” is used to represent both. The trick, then, is to find a way to help these English learners make the difference.
Here’s how I do it.
make
Actually “create” means “to create” or cause something to happen or result.
You make a cake, make noise, cause trouble or make friends.
Do
On the other hand, “do” usually means simply performing an action without referring to the consequences. So you do aerobics or exercises, do business or do your job. You can do better or worse, you can do better or worse.
Other Uses of Make and Do
Depending on the context, both to do and do can be used to convey different meanings in a sentence. A good example is homework. Teachers do homework, but learners do homework.
Both verbs form part of many idioms and expressions. This can sometimes make their distinction less clear, but usually the definitions given above still hold true. Here are some additional examples using “Do” and “Make”:

dance, bargain, do as you’re told, get away, do chores, do good, do harm, do yourself, repeat (this or something), do someone, do the dishes, do the laundry, do the right thing do, make time, do well, do without, do one’s best, do one’s duty
DO IT
Make a deal, deliver, make a difference, make a list, make a mess, talk on the phone, make a point, make a profit, promise, fix, make an effort, convince, connect, make enemies, make fun of someone, make love, money earn, make news, admonish, prevail (very similar in the context of beginning), make up, make room, make sense of, make someone happy, make someone laugh, make someone sad, make sure, make the bed, make time, make room, make tracks, make up (has many meanings), make up a story (same as creating a story), make a decision, make war, and pave the way
This is a short reference list to give you some idea of the range and difference that can be found in spoken English using the words “do” and “make”. In most cases, after a session explaining and demonstrating these language elements in context, my learners have less trouble distinguishing when to use “do” and when to use “do.” I hope this helps you and your EFL learners as well.
