Tips on How to Motivate Your English Language Learners to Study ESL
Rod Ellis defines motivation as “learners’ efforts to learn L2 as a result of a need to learn or a desire to learn” (1995).
Two main types of motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic, can influence the learning process. Intrinsic motivation is task motivation arising from interest inherent in learning tasks, while extrinsic motivation refers to external influences that influence the strength of a learner’s motivation, such as influences from teachers and parents.
While some students have their own intrinsic motivation or extrinsic motivation, other students need to be motivated to learn. There are many things you can do as a teacher to motivate students to learn. These strategies are based on various articles I read below.
Students want to learn more when they value the classroom activity and believe that they will succeed if they make a reasonable effort. Thus, “students’ motivation to learn is an acquired competence that is developed through common experiences, but is most often stimulated through direct modeling, communication of expectations, and direct instruction or socialization by significant others—especially teachers and parents” (Brophy, p.40). For achieving students, teachers understand that such learners are used to failure, so it is the teacher’s job to help them succeed.
Here are some strategies and tips that can motivate students and motivate them to learn.
- Provide a supportive environment and build a trusting relationship. “Motivation is primarily a feeling nurtured by the teacher in the learning environment” (Ellis, 1994). Greet your students, interact with them, express your personal concerns to them individually.
- Match the activity levels to the level of the students – try and make sure that the learning tasks are reasonably challenging for the students – not too hard and not too easy.
- Help students recognize the relationship between effort and outcome—learning is the long-term plan of effort and investment.
- Break learning steps into digestible chunks.
- Minimize student performance anxiety during learning activities.
