How to Write an Essay for the IELTS Academic Writing Test

The IELTS Academic Writing Test is considered the most difficult of the four sections of the IELTS exam. In the written exam. There are two tasks to do – Task1 and Task2. Candidates should first collect some free study materials from the Internet and follow the instructions and tips given there to write the essay. However, this is not a skill that can be developed without expert help, as in addition to writing the essay in the correct format, candidates need to know how to write complex sentences without errors, using a wide vocabulary correctly. Practicing grammar skills is a big factor. Essay writing falls under Task 2 and candidates need to write a minimum of 250 words with almost no spelling errors to achieve a high Band Score.

  1. A candidate should at least study the “High Standard Essay Book” to gain adequate knowledge to compose the highest quality, perfectly structured essay.
  2. Candidates should always follow the basic structure of the essay as per the IELTS writing test.
  3. A candidate taking the IELTS Mock exam should be aware that he will have a maximum of 40 minutes to write the essay and check for errors, as no extra time is allowed.
  4. After receiving permission to open the question paper, the candidate should first skim the question and should not spend more than 5 minutes thinking about the construction of the essay.
  5. The essay should be written by the candidate keeping in mind that the essay has three main components, (1) Introduction. (2) The body of the essay. and (3) Conclusion.
  6. The candidate should keep the ‘Introduction’ section short but descriptive, briefly introduce the topic of the essay and say what they will write about.
  7. There should be no more than 2 paragraphs in the body. Each paragraph should have one central idea and several sentences that support the idea.
  8. As the topic of the essay is supposed to be one for and the other against. For example, “Advantage and disadvantage” or “Advantage and disadvantage”. The candidate should write “advantage or benefit” in one paragraph and “disadvantage or disadvantage” in another paragraph. The use of complex sentences should be extremely clear.
  9. In the “Result” section, the candidate should not write more than two or three sentences. The best idea is to give your opinion at the end. That is, in his opinion, the advantages must be counted, or the disadvantages are too disturbing and cancel out the advantages.
  10. Usually, essay topics are asked: Do you agree or disagree? or state advantages and disadvantages or cause and effect. A candidate should also be prepared for different types of essays.
  11. The candidate should know that his essay will be graded for him by taking into account the following factors: (1) Response to Tasks, (2) Coherence, (3) Coherence, and (4) Range and Accuracy of Grammatical Application. Failure to pay attention to any of the above points may result in loss of 25% marks. At the same time, the candidate should remember that time is the main factor and should be managed with experience.
  12. Adhering to all the criteria required for writing an essay in a foreign language is not just for everyone, it really requires serious practice to save time and of course needs expert help.
  13. Although the candidate is asked to write in “Minimum” 250 words, there is a hidden point here. The candidate does not have the right to write as many words as possible for him. The maximum desired length of the essay should be 270-280 words. Writing too many words (50 words or more) will result in loss of marks.
  14. The candidate should remember that he should write exactly what is asked of him. For example: “Watching TV for long hours can be harmful for children in several ways.” Do you agree or disagree? Here the candidate is asked to write “Whether it is harmful to children in many ways”. If a candidate discusses the topic “Long hours of television viewing is harmful” as a general point, but omits the item “It is harmful for children in several ways”, he will surely lose marks.
  15. The candidate is not allowed to copy the complete sentence from the question and write it unchanged in the answer.
  16. The candidate will be judged on how well they can connect sentences and thoughts.
  17. Proper linking of paragraphs is very important and it works as a stumbling block and causes candidates to lose marks.
  18. While “Vocabulary Resource” is admirable, there is no need for a candidate to write “bombshell/complicated and rarely used words”. This would certainly not surprise the examiner. For example, if you write the word ‘Ingeminated’ instead of ‘Repeated’, you wouldn’t expect to get extra credit for it, because it’s an almost unknown word.
  19. Repeated use of the same word is undesirable; instead, the candidate should use synonyms, which will impress the examiner in terms of ‘Vocabulary range’.
  20. A candidate will lose marks if he/she fails to use a sentence correctly while “Sentence completion is the task”.

More minor points on the subject can be discussed. But these are the keys to success in writing a well-designed essay for the IELTS writing test. There is no need to press the points. You can get the most out of the IELTS writing test if you take your preparation very seriously, seek help from an expert or get admitted to a reputable IELTS coaching center and practice, follow all the do’s and don’ts of IELTS essays and study a good essay book. (s). The main purpose of entering the essay is to test the student’s depth of English language, vocabulary, how expressive he is and how well he is able to write a well-structured essay with a clear opinion. How well you can write an essay is very important to your score. Your final English writing efficiency will be tested through the essay you write.
