The PSAT/NMSQT is no ordinary standardized test. As the qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship, the PSAT/NMSQT is the Cerberus that guards the gates of a $2,500 scholarship award and a host of other coveted benefits—a leg up in the admissions process, the prestige of being National Merit. Scholar, sometimes even a full scholarship to certain universities. When money is involved, the rules are different; when it comes to money, everyone wants a slice of the pie. Statistically, men outperformed women on the PSAT/NMSQT at the time, and FairTest claimed that the discrepancy was due to the test format, which was allegedly skewed in favor of male students*.
