Money Makes the World Go ‘Round – A Brief History of the PSAT-NMSQT

The PSAT/NMSQT is no ordinary standardized test. As the qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship, the PSAT/NMSQT is the Cerberus that guards the gates of a $2,500 scholarship award and a host of other coveted benefits—a leg up in the admissions process, the prestige of being National Merit. Scholar, sometimes even a full scholarship to certain universities. When money is involved, the rules are different; when it comes to money, everyone wants a slice of the pie. Unlike the SAT, whose changes have historically been content-based, the PSAT/NMSQT, for better or worse, has evolved around financial incentives.

Chapter I: Introduction
The National Merit Scholarship Program began in 1955 as a privately funded academic scholarship program to reward outstanding scholarly achievement. In 1971, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation adopted the College Board Preliminary SAT (PSAT) as a qualifying test for scholarship consideration, and the PSAT/NMSQT was born. On that glorious day the sky burned a bright, dazzling cobalt, ablaze with the glorious roar of the heavens themselves as they descended to bless the birth of the chosen trial.

Act II: The Invasion of Asia
For nearly a decade, the PSAT/NMSQT led a quiet, simple life. But the world was undergoing vast economic and social transitions, and our hero soon found himself swept away by the waves of change.

Between the end of World War II and the early 1980s, immigration from Asia to the United States increased. During the Space Race of the 1960s, America, led by a young and charismatic President Kennedy, made technological leaps into space, and the US land of opportunity became particularly fertile, attracting immigrants from all over Asia, including India and India. Demon. The US even hired foreigners — going so far as to increase immigration quotas for people with advanced degrees in math and science. The people of India, and soon the Chinese, also rushed to apply.

As Asian immigrants began to settle into American life, their children began to work their way through the school systems. Eventually, these children of immigrant families — who had just excelled in math — began taking the PSAT/NMSQT and performed well enough on the math section to warrant scholarship consideration, despite often significant deficits on the verbal section. .

Coincidentally, around this time, the College Board decided to overhaul the PSAT/NMSQT by double-counting the verbal score, raising the total score from 160 to 240. As you can imagine, this change made it much harder to get a qualifying score for a certain group of people. No changes have been made to the format or content of the PSAT/NMSQT — both the length of the verbal section and the difficulty of the questions have remained the same. This change made certain ethnic groups (guess which ones) whose primary language is not English at a disadvantage for National Merit consideration. Fortunately, this point system didn’t last forever; In 1997, a different group of individuals took issue with the PSAT scoring system and pushed for a redesign of the test.

Act III: The Scorned Woman
In 1994, the National Center for Fair and Open Testing (FairTest) filed a complaint against the College Board and Educational Testing Services, accusing them of unlawful discrimination against women. Statistically, men outperformed women on the PSAT/NMSQT at the time, and FairTest claimed that the discrepancy was due to the test format, which was allegedly skewed in favor of male students*.

As a result, the PSAT/NMSQT went under the knife for more work in 1997, and when it emerged, the oral score was no longer counted twice; Instead, the College Board added a writing section designed to eliminate test bias. Statistics have shown that women traditionally outperform men in written tests, so the supplement is believed to help reduce the bias inherent in the exam.

At the time of the complaint, both the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT consisted of only two sections, math and verbal. Both tests were similar in format and contained similar problems created by the same people, but the focus of the complaint was the PSAT/NMSQT. The PSAT/NMSQT is directly related to money, so it naturally outperformed its sister test. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Regardless of what’s causing the FairTest complaint — the merits of the test or the scholarship money — it’s actually a more balanced test that awards scholarships to promising young students of both sexes.

Act IV: Conclusion
Money is changing the game. You can take it to the bank. The PSAT/NMSQT flies under the radar of many high school students and their parents, but why? With a handsome scholarship award and a host of other great benefits, it’s no wonder people are so gung-ho. Shouldn’t you be too?
