Dating is meeting several people to get to know them better and meet or find a marriage partner. There are two results for dating namely –
• Socialization or learning social skills and
• Marriage.
It is important for people of the opposite sex to learn why they should date, when to start dating, why they should date, and what kind of dating they should do at different times in their lives.
Dating for socializing or learning social skills is a critical dating season and one of the most important reasons to encourage dating among young people of a certain age group. Many scientific studies and religious organizations support dating experiences for young people so that the communication problems between men and women that are at the root of spousal abuse, divorce, and unhappy marriages can be addressed. It is a well-known fact that men and women speak different languages even when they use the same words, which means that it takes great skill for men and women to understand each other. Men rely on logic to make decisions, while women depend on their feelings.
Research shows that keeping men and women separate until marriage before they learn how to communicate with each other has a negative effect on whether they will eventually marry. A socially skilled man or woman has every advantage over those who are not.
Social scientists and religious organizations that support dating as the first stage of male-female relationships believe that young people over the age of 16 can date. However, they caution that dating should not begin before this age for both boys and girls.
Dating at this stage is for socializing and learning social and communication skills, especially with the opposite sex. It also improves communication and social skills, as dating events at this stage involve group activities involving both sexes. Courtship at this stage may extend to two years or more for girls who may enter into marriage at the age of eighteen. This is a good enough time to learn some of the characteristics of men and women so that now young single adults know what to expect and what they can tolerate in a relationship with a man or woman.
Dating for socialization provides an opportunity for both sexes to learn how to behave with the friends and family of their future spouses. It helps young people to learn virtues such as friendship, tolerance, understanding, independence, honesty, forgiveness, which the dating period does not give enough time for. This would drastically shorten what would normally be long courtships for marriages and courtships that mostly end in heartache and sadness.
This early dating has been criticized by many, including some prominent religious organizations. Their main concern is that young people are more sexually active and more prone to sexual experiences that can harm their well-being. While agreeing with this possibility, it is worth noting that with or without dating for socializing, sexual activity among young people is on the rise, resulting in several unplanned pregnancies and illnesses. Dating designed for socialization will dramatically reduce the problem of teenage pregnancy and disease.
Establishing dating as a family culture for socialization is an idea that deserves everyone’s attention. Thus, the appropriate ways to implement it will be identified, taught and helped young people to play by the rules.
For socializing activities, dating should involve families and neighborhood groups. Group dating activities should be a series to reinforce the goals of social and communication skills.
