Where Are the Role Models?
According to the Microsoft Encarta Dictionary (2009 Edition), a role model is “someone to be copied: a worthy person who is a good example for other people.”
Against this simple but clear picture of willful theft, mindless looting of treasures, mismanagement of resources, lack of visionary leadership, impunity, premeditated lying, rampant corruption at high and low, one can point to who is a good role model. No wonder many continue to ask, resigned to fate: Who and where are the role models in the Nigerian system?
Indeed, any concerned Nigerian, old or relatively young, knows how the age-old system of good societal values of honesty, integrity, dignity, hard work, communal living and good neighborliness has been influenced not too far away by various tribes and communities within the country. between the past, usually in recent times, has been shouting into what has become leadership at various levels in various sectors of the national economy.
This contemporary issue, for example, becomes more interesting yet cynical than ever when people in social circles exchange views on who the younger generation of Nigerians in positions of leadership/authority can emulate in a concrete sense of what ideals some Nigerians actually embody. .
It is interesting, how do we expect children to become responsible citizens tomorrow by developing good morals, hard work, honesty, respect for parents and elders? For the many problems facing Nigeria today, everyone is pointing fingers at someone else. According to people, almost everyone is corrupt and dishonest, and their actions are out of necessity and forced upon them by others.
Nevertheless, according to the folk stories of many senior citizens and other Nigerians, they are painfully nostalgic for fond memories of the enduring ideals of the good old days when the youth looked to the elders for direction and guidance.
It was a time when there were living legends in their respective spheres of influence whose track records of great prowess and integrity were compelling. It was indeed a time when relatively young Nigerians wanted to emulate the fine qualities of such leaders to build a manly and progressive society for the welfare of the majority.
It is no longer news in the land that many people, both old and young, are perhaps more disappointed than ever by what has happened to some of the people they so ignorantly held in high esteem.
In a strange development in the socio-economic and political system of the country, the frustrations of certain individuals and institutions over the sudden collapse of the moral fiber of many people cut across various sectors of the country’s economy: Judiciary, Sports, Banking, Politics, Civil. From Service, Corporate Nigeria, Media, Stock Exchange, Academia to Religion. Unfortunately, at every step is a mixture of one or the other shocking scandal!
Commenting on a recent televsion program on national television, he spoke in his witty, characteristic style about the rise of a culture of greed that allows for corrupt practices in leadership, the free collapse of the moral fabric like a pack of cards these days, and the need for it. The National Publicity Secretary of the Afenifere Renewal Group, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, captured the scenario to reinforce good leadership to bring the country out of the woods: “A man without character crumbles under pressure.”
Another young man, known simply as Odu, is having an adventure in the opinion of You Tell Us readers, perhaps out of frustration from reading or watching clips of cases involving “elder” Nigerians involved in some financial scandal or mismanagement of resources. On Sunday’s NEXT segment, he expressed his opinion about the piercing.
A reader lamented in the publication: “Are there any credible civil servants left in Nigeria?… why can’t people do their jobs honestly according to the rules laid down? Nigeria can never move forward with people. without any honesty or integrity in public administration. I’m just tired and I’m ready to check it out!…”
It is interesting that Nigeria’s recent past Prof. Recognizing that a good, prosperous society is built by the meaningful efforts of individuals who make up human society, Dora Akunyili, in her ongoing move to promote the core message of the Rebranding Nigeria Project, the Honorable Minister of Information and Communications called for what is called personal or self-branding, which begins with individual Nigerians.
It cannot be disagreed with him that the task of placing the country in good standing in the community of nations must really begin with individuals, families or homes, for these constituents or units are microcosms of the larger society.
Despite the ripples of frustration many Nigerians have with many individual leaders and institutions for their failure to demonstrate clear moral rectitude and ideals in their spheres of influence in our national life, it must be reiterated that there is no doubt. that we can consciously have more Nigerians whose lifestyle, outlook, character, values-based leadership endear them as role models to others.
This goal can be achieved by Nigerians consciously, regularly monitoring what they are doing to the benefit of the majority; form good behavior and make it a habit; make and stick to strong resolutions to leave a worthy legacy once you’re here; avoid avarice and tempting corrupt tendencies; keep your eyes simple; and find room for God in all that they do. This is because we humans cannot do anything by ourselves; but with God all things are of course possible.
We all also need to remember that the people a younger generation strives to be in their early years will greatly influence how that generation will function as they reach adulthood. So who is your role model then?
