Faces of Asperger Syndrome
Asperger Syndrome (AS) has recently made a very noticeable leap into the consciousness of the American public. Two recent reality television shows featured contestants with this high-functioning form of autism. See the stories of model Heather Kuzmich and Amazing Race contestant Zev Glassenberg, who rose to the top of American popularity on America’s Next Top Model. Neither Kuzmich nor Glassenberg won their show, but the country as a whole was given a glimpse of the challenges these patients face.
Asperger’s Syndrome is a developmental disorder on the autism spectrum that affects social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and reluctance to accept change. If the patient has a mild illness, a diagnosis can be made and the patient will be labeled as solitary or eccentric. Some sources indicate that many famous successful people, such as Albert Einstein, Leonardo DaVinci, Henry Ford, and Bill Gates, display symptoms of AS.
The disease is named after the Viennese pediatrician Hans Asperger. In 1940, he described a pattern of behavior exhibited by some of his patients. He noted that the intellectual and language development of these patients is normal, but their social skills are weakened. He noted that it is more common in boys than in girls.
Symptoms of Asperger Syndrome include high intelligence, high vocabulary, repetitive routines or rituals, socially and emotionally inappropriate behavior, nonverbal communication problems, and clumsy and uncoordinated motor movements. The onset of AS occurs later than is typical for classical autism. Most children are diagnosed between the ages of 5 and 9.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that between 1 in 100 and 1 in 300 children in the United States have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASD occurs in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups, but is four times more common in boys than in girls. The causes of ASD are unknown. According to the CDC, most scientists agree that genetic material is a risk factor for any ASD. Children with a sibling or parent with ASD are also at higher risk of developing ASD.
Diagnosing AS can be difficult because there is no medical test, such as a blood test, to diagnose the disorder. Doctors must look at the child’s behavior, development, and parents’ reactions to make a diagnosis. There is no cure for AS, but early intervention treatment services can improve a child’s development and socialization.
People with Asperger’s rely heavily on rigid internal rules and struggle with unwritten social cues and social interactions. Reality TV stars Kuzmich and Glassenberg both survived very high stress, competitive and social environments. They both had their faults, but overall our presence on the national stage gave the rest of us a glimpse into their private worlds.
