How to Avoid Verbal Mannerisms When Teaching
Have you ever sat through a class or lecture or simply listened to someone talk using the same word or phrase over and over again (eg ‘ah’; ‘OK’) to distract you? Yes I have!
We all have words or phrases that we tend to use frequently. It could be a statement like ‘That’s good’. If used in the right context, these expressions are good to use often. However, it’s not “good” to use them as “gap fillers” when thinking about what you want to say next. It’s better to take a break in the conversation because it can create a sense of anticipation in your students about what’s going to happen next and gives you a chance to gather your thoughts for what you want to say. Run your eyes around the classroom to make sure the class is ready for what’s to come. It’s a better “gap filler.”
As a teacher, one of your main responsibilities is to be as perfect an example as possible of correct language use.
Frequent use of words like “good” may indicate a lack of vocabulary. On the other hand, it could simply be a nervous behavior caused by a lack of confidence in what you are doing or your content knowledge or the teaching approach you are using. It’s important to remember that as a classroom teacher, you will always know more than most, if not all, of your students. Therefore, there is no need to be insecure and nervous.
On a more positive note, using these words can be an automatic, involuntary “gap filler” designed to give you time to think.
So what do you do to prevent them from distracting your students?
First, you need to know that they are happening. Hopefully, your teaching supervisor will point this out to you during your teaching experience and help you overcome these before you start your career. Once you start your career and are suspicious of your verbal behavior, ask your teacher to observe the class to check the situation.
Once you know you have these behaviors, there are ways to avoid them.
1. Learn to pause in the moment instead of saying a word or phrase. Then the pause in what you say will be much shorter than you actually think because your conscious and subconscious mind are working much faster than you can speak. Then decide what you want to say and say it.
2. This is a good time to look around to see how the class/audience is reacting to what you are saying. Use this time to think.
3. Make a list of your verbal behaviors and make a list of words or phrases you can use to replace the words “offended”. Here are two examples:
ok ok:
“Any questions? Are you okay with this? Any problems with this? Do you agree? Do you understand? Do you need more information before we continue? Now. Next. Okay, let’s continue.”
Right:
“That’s right. That’s right. That’s right. That’s the right answer. That’s the right answer. That’s it. Well. Who agrees with that answer? Yes; Tom, do you get that answer?”
These are, of course, simple examples. However, it is important to make sure that the alternative word or phrase fits well with the context in which you are using it. Otherwise, it will also be a distraction.
If you pride yourself on how well you use language, you’ll want to eliminate these verbal behaviors and expand your operational vocabulary.
