How to Overcome the IELTS Test Fear to Ensure a Higher Score

Exams always send shivers down the spine of most students. Moreover, when the exam is unconventional. When a student or aspirant appears for an exam like IELTS, he or she is well aware that he or she will be competing with high-level competitors. A student from a non-English speaking country knows that they will be competing with native English speakers. But one thing any candidate should know is that in case of IELTS the competition is not personal level. There is no ranking system in this test, so there is nothing to fear about what your rank is. Only Band Score is calculated in IELTS. Just as it is easy or difficult for a non-native English speaker to score as high as 7+ or 8, it just depends on how prepared the student or candidate is.

So what are the fears? Some factors come to mind for the student:

1) Could I listen to and understand the audio clips of “Anatolian English Speakers” which are easier for native English speakers but difficult for me?

2) What if I miss a few words or questions while listening to the audio?

3) How friendly would the examiner be during the ‘Speaking Test’?

4) Was I able to communicate properly with the examiner during the ‘Speaking Test’?

5) Could I impress the examiner with my vocabulary during the speaking exam?

6) What should I do if I get nervous and stutter during the speaking test?

7) Will I be able to complete the ‘Reading Test’ in time?

8) Writing is known to be the most difficult. Could I write about completely unknown topics?

Such and so on. Students/Candidates are advised not to fall under the grip of fear, the more intense it is, the more prone to make mistakes. A panicked candidate is bound to make mistakes. In reality, candidates panic because IELTS is not just another conditional exam. It is a completely different form of examination to measure the candidate’s proficiency in all forms of the English language. For example, in many non-English speaking countries, the English language taught in schools or colleges is British English. But in the case of IELTS, if the candidate is going to a North American country, he should familiarize himself with the North American accent and style. That is, in the listening and speaking tests, he would be assessed on how well he was able to speak ‘North American’ English. Similarly, if a native speaker from the United States wants to travel to the UK, he must listen, speak and write in British English.

Given the rigor and pattern of the exam, there are reasons for the candidate to be apprehensive, but only if it is not matched with the actual test contexts. A serious candidate should start preparation at least two months before the exam date. But for a non-English speaking candidate from a non-English speaking country, preparation should be even earlier. First of all, a candidate with a weak English language should listen, speak, read and write a lot for his basic preparation. All this must be done under the guidance of an experienced English teacher. We hope that a candidate with poor English skills will need 3-4 months of extensive study to get to the level where they can consider starting IELTS preparation. A further two months of careful and sincere practice under the guidance of an expert IELTS teacher or a reputed IELTS coaching center is necessary to achieve a good score of 7+ for the candidate.

It is common that even a very well prepared candidate breaks down in the exam hall. So, the question “How to get rid of fear factors” comes to your mind. There is no one-size-fits-all offer, a generic offer can be made that applies to any candidate. The candidate should first know about himself whether he is nervous or not. If he is an angry person by nature, he should work harder to overcome his anger no matter the situation. Being easily upset and panicking is related to a mindset that needs to be changed with a lot of practice and focusing on the areas that make a person nervous. As a general solution to get rid of fear in the exam hall, we can offer the following:

1) Focus on your weak areas from the 1st day of your preparation and improve on those areas.

2) Be mentally prepared from day 1 that you can deal with many unknown topics.

3) “Take admission in a professional IELTS coaching center as they will conduct several mock tests which will gradually increase your confidence level. Since mock tests replicate the real exam, you will get used to unfamiliar topics.

4) Practice in advance to avoid panic in the exam hall, consult a specialized counselor if needed.

5) Think about your strong areas to gain courage. Everyone has some strengths and some weaknesses, and you are not the one and only person with some weaknesses.

6) Focusing on your strengths and building on them will definitely ensure that you score higher on the test.

7) Look for things that scare you in the exam hall. Unknown questions? Fear of losing concentration? Fear of failure? Or something else? If you can overcome the fear factors by hard practice then it is okay, otherwise you should see a psychiatrist as these are mental problems that can be cured by counseling or medication.

8) Take mock tests more seriously, assume you are facing real tests, it would help you a lot in being a cool customer.

9) Grab a piece of Cadbury chocolate, it will stimulate your nerves and keep you positive.

A “nervous person” is not what he is, he gets angry, some people suffer from a strange kind of “Exam phobia”, suffer and panic. So, it won’t happen overnight that a nervous person will become brave and a panicked boy will become fearless overnight. What the candidates should do from the beginning of the preparation is that they should convey their problems to their teachers and get help from them to get rid of the problems. Also, one should analyze oneself, ask oneself why one should be nervous or panic. You know that being in the grip of fear will cause you to make mistakes, distract you, and ultimately defeat you. So, right from the word, the candidate should work on his weak points and always try to get rid of the fear. It would be very helpful to practice a lot and be evaluated by teachers. Above all practice, practice and more practice, be confident and mentally prepared to handle any situation with a fearless mind.
