Rosacea – How IPL Gets Rid of Red Face, Blood Vessels and Acne
Rosacea, also called Acne Rosacea, is a very common skin condition characterized by a red face. Rosacea causes flushing of the face, which results in red blood vessels and capillaries that appear permanently dilated and a red facial appearance, especially on the cheeks, nose, and midface. Over time, red bumps or acne lesions also appear, and Rosacea can also affect the eyes, a condition called Ocular Rosacea. In some people, after many years, Rosacea can result in Rhinophyma, an overgrowth of excess skin on the nose, a condition immortalized by film actors Jimmy Durante and Wally Fields, both sufferers of Rhinophyma.
Recently, the use of a new light therapy called IPL or Intense Pulsed Light has revolutionized the treatment of Rosacea. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments are very effective in closing the dilated blood vessels that cause the red facial appearance seen in Rosacea patients. IPL is gentler than laser treatments and has less discomfort and no visible signs of treatment, such as the bruising that is often seen after some laser treatments.
What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a common skin condition that affects more than 40 million Americans. The cause is unknown, but heredity and fair or light skin color are important predisposing factors. Symptoms of this condition are:
o Facial flushing –Facial flushing is usually the first symptom. Flushing occurs especially after spicy food, drinking alcohol and coffee, and during emotional stress.
o Persistent red-The red-faced look doesn’t go away. It may look like an ongoing sunburn.
o Pimples and pimples- Over time, red spots, pustules and acne appear. These bumps can be painful and do not respond to typical acne treatment.
o Visible blood vessels on the faceOver time, small red blood vessels appear on the skin of the face. They are most often found on the nose, cheeks and chin, but can also be seen on the forehead.
There are common triggers that can cause an outbreak and that can be avoided to control outbreaks. Common triggers are:
– Sun exposure
-Emotional Stress
-Hot weather
– The wind
– Heavy training
– Alcohol consumption
-Hot baths
– Spicy food
-Irritating Skin Care Products
How does IPL or Intense Pulsed Light get rid of Red Face?
IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, uses a bright flash of visible light to close blood vessels and capillaries, which causes redness and a red facial appearance. IPl uses a filter that emits only a specific color of light that is uniquely absorbed or received by the skin’s blood vessels to hit the skin. Thus, IPL light rays only affect the dilated blood vessels in the skin and do not harm the normal skin. When IPL light energy is absorbed by dilated blood vessels, the dilated blood vessels are damaged and blocked. It removes blood vessels, capillaries and the red appearance of the face. I use the Starlux IPL LuxGreen which uses a 650nm light range which is ideal for removing dilated blood vessels and reducing skin redness. The results are truly remarkable.
IPL is gentler than other commonly used lasers. Lasers often cause bruising and sometimes skin burns that can leave white marks on the face. These problems have limited the benefit of lasers on the face, and IPL has become the treatment of choice for this condition.
What is IPL treatment like?
IPL treatments are very quick, simple and relatively painless. Protective shields such as sunglasses will be placed to protect your eyes. A soothing gel will be placed on the skin for your comfort and to increase the effectiveness of the IPL treatment. We do not use local anesthesia because it is unnecessary and can interfere with the effectiveness of the treatment.
The IPL treatment head will be placed against your skin and a bright flash of light will be fired to treat the red areas. The entire face will be treated with a series of flashes. You’ll feel a slight sting when the flash hits your skin, but it’s very tolerable.
After the treatment, cold packs will be placed on the skin for your comfort. Your skin may look pink for an hour or so, but there is often no bruising or visible skin damage as with laser treatments.
You will be able to go back to work and your skin will usually look pretty normal after a few hours.
When will I see results?
Immediately after treatment, we look for and see a change or darkening of the reddened areas. Some very small areas are closed during the first treatment.
However, larger areas and skin redness gradually subside within about 5 weeks after an IPL treatment. This gradual improvement is gentler than laser treatment and takes time. This gentler approach avoids complications and thus the IPL method has become the preferred method.
Moderate to severe cases require 3 treatments scheduled 5 weeks apart. Because it is impossible to cover and close all the affected areas equally during each treatment. As treatments progress, the areas to be treated become smaller and more complete removal is possible.
What skin care products are best for rosacea sufferers?
It is very important to prevent sun damage and other forms of skin inflammation. A good non-comedogenic sun block is essential. We avoid irritating creams like Retin A, Tazorac, and strong acid peels. Vitamin C Serum is soothing and has anti-inflammatory properties that are very beneficial.
If you have redness and dilated capillaries on your face, MetroGel is an essential component of any skin care regimen. The new Rosaclear System from Obagi Skin Care combines several effective ingredients and is a very effective new skin care system for patients.
Where can I find IPL treatments?
Board Certified Dermatologists and Plastic Surgeons are laser and IPL experts. You’ll need to search the internet and do your homework to find a board-certified doctor who offers laser and IPL services and is interested in treating facial redness and acne.
You need a complete systemic approach, including IPL treatments, appropriate skin care and medical management.
You’re more likely to find the exact right treatment at a doctor’s office. I recommend avoiding these light treatments at non-physician Spas and medical Spas. Not all IPL machines are the same, and those used in a board-certified physician’s office are likely to be more effective and more experienced.
Do your homework and find a trusted professional.
