The ROLE of Language in National Unity

Language is present in every human society – school, company, organization, group, home, etc. plays a very important role. The language of any human society says a lot about that society, so it can be further emphasized that language and any human society are inseparable. In any human society, language occupies a more important place than it seems to everyone. The functions of language in any human society include; expression of ideas, political, administrative, educational, social, religious, legislative, etc.

However, we will use Nigeria as an example. The goal of any human society is to have peace and unity, many nations in the world today are facing various degrees of conflict and unfortunately, Nigeria is one such country. This paper is designed to examine the role that language plays in achieving national unity in Nigeria. People have had different opinions about the meaning of language in the past.

My teacher, Professor Fakuade.G. I said and I quote that “language is the faithful mirror of society” in other words, language is what shows the true essence of every society. This means that the purpose of language in any society is to reflect what that society is to the world. Therefore, the language of any society must give us perfect information about what that society contains; culture, beliefs, dress, marriage and any other sociolinguistic information about society. Flag, anthem, currency, etc. in other words, language is the window through which the people can see the society.

As reviewed by Bamgbose, English is the language of integration in Nigeria, amidst the complexities of Nigeria especially on the issue of language, English is the only language that expresses the spirit of togetherness. This clearly shows that the English language in Nigeria so far has played a very important role in holding Nigeria together as a single nation. Amidst our cultural diversity and differences in beliefs, the English language has still played a major role in keeping Nigeria together, and since it is the link between the various ethnic groups that exist in Nigeria, English cannot be denied this plus in keeping us together. away Of the more than 500 languages that exist in Nigeria, we still have one link and that link is none other than English, which has served as a medium of communication among the various tribes in Nigeria.

Of all the legacies that the British left behind in Nigeria at the end of colonial rule, perhaps none is more important than the English language. It is now the language of government, business and commerce, education, mass media, literature, and many internal and external communications. Bamgbose (1971)

As the Language of Wider Communication (LWC), English is used for communication, ceremonial purposes and record-keeping, dissemination of information, self-examination and embodiment of thought among the various language groups in Nigeria. English provides the basis of the common language, which is the condition for the existence of any nation. Thus, English as a common language for all ethnic groups creates a sense of collective unity despite individual or ethnic differences.

It is clear from this that the language that has held Nigeria together till date has been the English language handed down to us by our colonial masters and it has played this role well so far. In our day-to-day official communication, this has greatly strengthened the relationship that exists between the various ethnic groups that exist in Nigeria. An Igbo person who has never been to the western part of the country or does not understand Yoruba will definitely see English as the best means to express his emotion, thought or whatever he wants to say in such a situation.

Another area where language has been useful in keeping us together in Nigeria is in academics as it has greatly helped bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, the privileged and the less privileged. So in Nigeria we have English as the link between the upper class and the lower class.

The important role that language plays in religion can never be overemphasized in various religious gatherings; English has served as a medium of communication and thus brings people together under one umbrella. Many religious gatherings in Nigeria use English either in court proceedings and of course it has contributed significantly to peaceful coexistence in our beloved country. Although we have had various religious disputes and conflicts of one kind or another.

As we have pointed out earlier the various roles of the English language in achieving and maintaining national unity, I believe that the role(s) played by the English language so far would be better served by the local language. or an attempt to discredit the English language, contributed greatly to the national unity of Nigeria. But I am convinced that if this position really existed in our language, the situation would be better; if the language was at home.

Misrepresentation of ideas and expressions is one of the main causes of conflicts around the world today, where words/expressions are used that misrepresent the intended ideas. You can never reach the level that a native speaker can in their own language, and this has led to what many people never bargained for, sending many to their untimely graves. Unfortunately for a man, using another man’s language, the language of a man who is said to be his L2, is seen as a tool to help him express his thoughts; he succeeds in distorting his thoughts. In such a situation, he is using a word out of context, and some people may be very sensitive to the use of the word. If our official language was a local language, many of the conflicts and ethnic disputes we experienced in the past could have been avoided. The reason is that many people verbally misrepresented their thoughts, views and intentions due to their low level of knowledge, choosing the wrong words at the wrong time, which led to unfortunate testimonies. We have chosen English as the “official language of the day” and this has led to a situation where our local languages have taken a back seat. English is the key to any important door, there is no one who cannot communicate in English. language is expected to play an important role in any organization.

The New International Webster’s Comprehensive Dictionary of the English Language (Encyclopedic Edition) defines language as the expression and communication of feelings or ideas between people by means of speech and hearing, and the systematized confirmation of spoken or heard sounds. Given to people for a certain period of time.” From the above point of view, this suggests that language should convey an internal (original) idea and express what is inside a particular speaker. But this is not always the case. A particular speaker is proficient in the language he uses as a means of communication at a particular time. if not, for example, a Hausa person who wants to communicate with a Yoruba or an Igbo, will have to use English where the level of knowledge is low. Compared to L1, such a person is very likely to distort some of his intentions during communication, and the other party may not accept it . y and may cause conflict between them. In such a case, can it be said that language can play its role well? It did not necessarily justify the meaning of language and the essence of communication.

The method of conveying a specific idea during communication is very important; therefore, the essence of any communication is to accurately present the inner thought of the speaker. Many Nigerians think in their MT and try to convey their intentions in English and in some cases the thoughts are distorted, they don’t have the right word to express their thoughts. The situation is not the same if the interlocutors of the same ethnic origin both know the language at an adequate level.

With a similar language background and better understanding (and accurate decoding of ideas), there will be a reduction in the level of conflict that exists in Nigeria. We can make Pidgin English our English version. I believe this will go a long way in reducing the level of recurring conflict in our beloved country Nigeria. Since the source of most of these conflicts is the way and manner in which our different ideas are misrepresented or interpreted, we need to find a better way to communicate, and so I believe everyone has a role to play. We need to find better ways to express ourselves and avoid unnecessary conflicts by using a language that we do not reach the motivational level and work on our communication skills.

To this end, the federal government should consult a language expert on how to achieve this goal and give full attention to this course. Let all well meaning Nigerians come together and see how we can explore and utilize the wealth in our language as we move towards national unity. And make every Nigerian understand that language can play more than a role of communication. Let’s consider our language policy in another way, let’s prevent the death of our symbol language.

It is urgent for us to begin to see language as a vital agent of unity in our beloved country Nigeria and see how we can use this tool as an agent of unity to make Nigeria a more united country and push aside all ethnic and ethnic groups. tribal differences. Language is a possible tool in our quest for national unity and should be treated with full commitment and seriousness. Every Nigerian should see how thinking and language can contribute to the growth of the African giant.

Our culture is absorbed into our language. Let us eagerly and proudly embrace our language and promote what we have in common, then our differences will be a thing of the past. This is a call for national unity but this time it comes through an unpopular tool, let us use this valuable tool towards one Nigeria. Language has a very important role in our quest for national unity. Let’s treat it like we treat football. Language has an important role in our quest for national unity.
