Nursery Rhymes – Where Have All The Traditional Ones Gone?

If you’re reading this, there’s probably a kid or two running around causing havoc. If, like me, you’re wondering where all the traditional nursery rhymes have gone, I’m here to set the record straight!

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Old MacDonald Had A Farm, Incy Wincy/Itsy Witsy Spider, ABC and more from Kindergarten. Do you remember traditional nursery rhymes like? I assume you remember reading them a certain way, with different emphasis and emphasis on certain key words. And let’s not forget the melodies – impossible! In fact, many melodies are reused in many children’s songs, for example Twinkle Twinkle has the same melody as A, B, C Song and Baa Baa Black Sheep.

You can imagine my horror when I recently tried to entertain my little girl (15 months) with some videos on YouTube. approx none of these aforementioned nursery rhymes were anything like I remember! Was my poor memory to blame here?

I wanted to show my baby all the nursery rhymes I grew up with, just like my mom/dad and they did. I was shocked (or should that read “shocked”?) to see how catastrophically bad the vast majority of online videos are. I mean, they were really terrible! At best, some were really laugh-out-loud funny, but for all the wrong reasons(!), and at worst, some were downright scary and perhaps not suitable for younger children. Maybe the good:bad quality ratio was about 1:40! I’ve also noticed that most YouTube kindergarten videos have incredibly long intros – 20, 30 or more seconds of pre-ambling material, promos, and other irrelevant material before actually getting into the main topic. I probably don’t need to tell you, dear parents, that even just 20 seconds can seem like an incredibly long time when you have a squirming and slightly bored baby!

Since the singer/company’s first language is often not actually English, not only the websites and animations, but mostly the incredibly low quality songs and lyrics themselves are often wrong. Where was all this? real Gone are the nursery rhymes, I wonder? There were very few online resources that reflected my childhood memories. “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” now became “Dwingle Dwingle” and the little boy from Baa Baa Black Sheep now lived. in strip (what does that mean!)

It’s important that we don’t lose our traditional songs to the relentless technological changes that allow anyone to upload whatever they want to the internet. It is important that high standards are maintained and that we convey our songs accurately on the playing field. I urge you to watch some of these kindergarten videos to see just how terrible they are. You will laugh at some of them and get angry at some of them, but after the initial laughter wears off, you will also feel the loss of your childhood memories.

Unfortunately, the number of views a video gets or where it appears in search results doesn’t tell you anything about its quality. How to find the good stuff and ignore the bad stuff? My recommendations are as follows:

  1. Go to YouTube (not Google) to search
  2. Use the full name of the nursery rhyme – ie ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ is better than ‘Twinkle Twinkle’ – and use quotation marks around the title.
  3. Adding the word “British” or “English” can really help
  4. Click Search options and under “Properties” (far right) click High definition.
