Learn Spanish and Open Up a Whole New World of Spanish Humor
Yes, there is some work involved in learning Spanish, but there is also a lot of fun! For example, if you enjoy humor in English, when you learn Spanish, you will be able to enjoy three types of humor: English, Spanish, and Spanglish!
Spanglish is a crossover combination of two languages, often using a play on words in one language to find impossible funny translations in the other. To understand either of these, you must first understand both Spanish and English. Example: “Como está frijole cabrito?” Yes? It makes no sense! Of course it does! It’s like, “How have you been, baby?” (“Como está frijole cabrito” literally translates to “how are/are(you) – bean – (young male) goat”! See? That’s not worth it!)
Spanish humor comes in a wide variety of forms. For most of it, you need to know popular slang phrases that vary from country to country to understand what is being said. Most are not easily translated, or perhaps not at all. About 80% of the jokes you hear in Spanish cannot be translated in a way that the humor will come across. Same with English. For example, the Abbot and Costello routine, “Who’s on First?” it just won’t translate! You could create a similar story that would pass OK in Spanish, but “Who’s on first?” depends on the play on words inherent in the English language.
By any chance “Born in Los Angeles?” have you seen the movie? It was funny in English and hilarious if you can understand Spanish too. It’s almost worth learning Spanish just to watch that movie again and understand what’s actually being said!
There are great Spanish comedians and actors (not just Cantinflas!)
There are some great humor programs on Spanish radio and television in the US. In addition to Spanish, you will also hear Spanglish and English. The result is a rich cultural mix of languages and customs, people’s reactions and hilarious humor. And you need to speak Spanish to understand it!
So you see, there are a lot of fun and funny things in the world that you’re missing unless you speak Spanish (they go over your head).
Best advice? Learn Spanish, expand your horizons and have fun!
