That was young me, and to put it mildly, it wasn’t the best way for me to learn a new language. For four years, I struggled with average grades and keeping material low. Now, many years wiser and with a new purpose for learning Spanish, I went in search of a program that would take me further and faster than the old classroom days of my teenage years. Here’s what I found.

Let me share with you what I want in the program. If I was going to learn Spanish, and I wanted to do it on my own terms. There were only a few things on my wish list that any educational program I would start would have to provide me. Look, you don’t agree that the things I’ve come up with are necessary to get into any Spanish study program.

1. Control

It was important that I have complete control over when I read, how much I read at a time, and where I read. If I chose to enroll in a community college course, I would be giving up all three of these things, and I couldn’t let that happen. After a long day at work, it certainly feels good not to leave the house to study Spanish in the evening.

2. Interesting and Fun

I didn’t want the learning process to feel like work or boring like it was in high school. I felt that by actively participating in the lessons, I would not only make learning easier and faster, but also fun. I wanted to smile while practicing my Spanish lessons. The presentation style of the program was to deal with different teaching methods that would attract my attention.

3. Results

The program I would eventually choose had to display the results. I wanted to see positive proof that many people have had success with the program. I figured that even my improved Spanish learning abilities might be enough to get me by if I could find a program with the experiences of many successful students.

4. Help when needed

I wouldn’t want to be on an island by myself. Although I wanted to study at my own pace, I wanted to help if I couldn’t find an answer any other way. My motto is to always have a lifeline.

So, you ask, was I looking for a needle in a haystack to find a program to learn to speak Spanish that met my four criteria? Let me just say that if it was a needle I was looking for, I found it! I’m a bit of a computer geek, so I was very happy to discover that I could use my computer to learn Spanish in a fun and fast way. In that old high school classroom 30 years ago, there was nothing better than sitting at a computer in a den to learn things that seemed impossible.
