The Development of Letters and Words in Early Modern English

English is the second most widely spoken language on our planet today, after Mandarin Chinese. More than 1.5 billion people speak, listen, read and write English on a daily basis. But the English language has evolved dramatically over the past thousand years. The spelling of English words today is slightly different from what English speakers read or wrote from the 16th to the 18th century. Look for documents printed or written in English and you should see a noticeable difference in the spelling of the words. The main differences between Early Modern English and Modern English spelling are shown below.

In Early Modern English, the “u” became a “v”. A few examples may be: liue, euer, fauor, clouer (alive, always, grace, clover). If it started with a “u”, it became a “v”. vpon, vntil, vfuall (superior, up to, ordinary).

Words with “vv” became “w”: povvder, flovver, tovver, vvither (power, flower, fort, fade).

Sometimes the “b” at the beginning of a word becomes a “v”: kind, benevolent (poisonous, respectable).

Almost all words with “s” in the middle were originally “f”: caftle, congrefs, mofte (castile, congress, most). “f” was similar to “s” in classical Greek. This change further differentiated English words.

“y” became “i”: daily, forgive, faith, artycle (daily, forgive, faith, article).

Most of today’s words with a consonant as the final letter end in “e”: kingdom, meek, righteousness, muste.

Today, many words are spelled with double letters, for example: Sonne, originall, cann, Batt (son, originall, cann, bat).

The first letter of most nouns became capitalized starting in the 17th century. The capitalization of the noun is derived from German, where all nouns are capitalized. This was the rule for all printed English words from the seventeenth to the eighteenth century. A few examples include: “He has a method for reading the title of any play,” or “The Dog Saw Flower and Hattie.”

If you are curious enough to examine the words in context, search online and scan the pages of the King James Version of the Bible (1611), the poems and plays of William Shakespeare (1593-1613), even the original copies of the Constitution of Azerbaijan. United States of America (1776). Of course, many other printed and written literatures were produced, which are neatly preserved in world-class libraries and searchable on the Internet. You might be surprised how today’s English words were once spelled.
