Spanish Language Immersion Schools Abroad – Get the Most Bang For Your Buck
Studying abroad in a full Spanish immersion program is absolutely the best way to learn Spanish or any foreign language. In most programs, especially in Latin America, the program includes about 4 hours of study per day and a home stay with a local family. Here’s how to ensure you’re getting the most bang for your buck for your overall immersion experience:
· Really research the schools in the area. Read reviews and, if possible, contact people who have attended the school.
· Ask the school many questions: How are teachers trained? What is their philosophy and language teaching system? What qualifications do teachers have? What materials are used and what materials do you need to bring?
· Do not pay the entire fee in advance. In most places it is not necessary. Pay the minimum deposit. If you don’t like it, you can change schools. Once you’re on the ground, it’s fairly easy to meet students who are doing programs at other schools, find out which one is the best, and switch.
· Homeschool before you go. Get a decent Spanish learning program and really focus on listening and speaking. Listen to CDs or DVDs several times without reading, and then repeat without reading. You need your full attention to hear the intonation, rhythm, and stress of the language, so don’t read all at once.
Once in the country:
· Realize that most language teachers in developing countries are not trained as foreign language teachers. Most of them have general teacher training. However, some teachers are naturally better, more experienced, or better trained than others. So if you are unhappy with your teacher, don’t hesitate to ask for a change.
· Be wary of teachers who don’t come to class with a real plan or who just want to talk to you about personal problems (common at more advanced levels).
· You are better off even as a beginner with a good teacher who doesn’t speak English than a bad teacher who speaks English. An incompetent teacher will constantly use English as a crutch to explain and you will hear very little spoken language. I advise you to contact a teacher who does not speak English.
· Be a proactive student! If your teacher is going too fast, say so. If you’ve learned a new language structure (like how to talk about the past) but haven’t practiced enough to really get it, ask for more practice. And experience should be primarily oral, not written.
· Four hours at a time is a long, long time to learn a language. Break it up with walks around town, sessions at the market or shops, or other activities where you can speak naturally and practice the language in real environments. The teacher will probably be happy to do this because 4 hours of sitting is a long time for him too! If the school is too strict to allow it, go to another school.
Remember, like anything, what you get out of an experience is tied to what you put into it. Prepare for the experience with the steps above and be proactive and disciplined as soon as you arrive. Even if you are in a Spanish full immersion program, work is still required. Very few people past the age of 5 actually “osmosis” a language.
