Book Review – The Rainbow Machine by Andrew T Austin

The rainbow car It is a completely different book than most books on NLP or hypnosis. As Steve Andreas notes in his introduction to Andy Austin’s book, the book embodies the spirit of neuro-linguistic programming, and he uses it all with “extreme skill, creativity, and extreme playfulness.” Steve Andreas credits Austin’s creativity in writing the book. Obviously, the book is not just one of the basic techniques or something that explains anything. Instead, it is a book written in many ways in the spirit of Haley’s classic, Unusual therapy.
It consists of several short chapters. Basically it consists of 56 chapters, if one includes an appendix on sub-modalities, totaling a short 220 pages. The stories are short, many are anecdotal, and describe the use of various neurolinguistic as well as provocative therapy techniques. There are also several chapters scattered throughout the text that provide some useful outlines of various things, such as general learning, the brain’s hemispheres, propositions, closures, reframing, the yes set, deletion, and a discussion of subtopics in the appendix. – methods. It is in the midst of largely disparate examples dealing with different problems using NLP, language and other creative techniques to facilitate change. There is also a very interesting chapter entitled The Right Man Syndrome (narcissism) which discusses some of the thought and belief patterns in individuals who are narcissistic.
Austin is quite tongue-in-cheek at times, but also shows a lot of insight into the human psyche and how to facilitate change. This is a fun and thought provoking book. This is a great book to read when you need a break from some of the more technical books on NLP. It’s a great book to pick up a chapter or two and read. The book does not make any grand claims. At times, he seems happy to observe and describe human variability. At other times, it provides compelling examples of creative intervention and effective change.
Overall, this book is unique and worth reading. This book inspires excitement about the process of becoming a change agent who uses NLP to help others in their lives.
