ESL: Learning and Teaching New Words
Teachers have their own styles of how students can adapt to lessons.
I remember learning English as a second language as an ESL teacher to some foreign students with different native languages.
Usually my teachers asked me to write sentences using new words and expressions. We checked them in class. My classmates edited the sentences and only asked the teacher if there was a misunderstanding. This was in high school. Although in college, it was fast (it depends on the course). Most of the lessons were a review of Basic English. After college/university, I had to study more to become a writer (my course wasn’t about writing). I have to study again (on my own) and study English in bulk and tons.
When I started teaching ESL to foreign students (in terms of level), I tried to introduce them to common words. Some new English learners used difficult and unfamiliar words. This will not be very helpful. Everyone should learn the common equivalent of a difficult word before using it.
It would be easiest to use a dictionary. However, if a Thesaurus is used, the student must focus on how to get the correct word for each sentence. Words in thesaurus have specific meanings.
Student’s electronic dictionaries are useful but incomplete. These gadgets are only good as a quick reference, but not for serious vocabulary learning. To learn ESL better, you need to know Basic English words by heart.
For comparison, I use at least two Basic Grammar books and several other English books (besides prescribed books and textbooks) that are relevant to the lessons. In addition, the teacher needs religious preparation for the lesson (from various sources, including the World Wide Web).
What I do: (tips)
1. I let the student find 10 words from a short article or any story.
2. Students should be able to find the meaning of these words. We discuss each word and how it relates to life, culture, cinema, fashion and food as examples.
3. Students use each word in a sentence. This can be a class activity or homework.
4. Sentences can be checked by the teacher or another classmate or the student himself. An example sentence is given by the teacher for each word.
5. Use/incorporate the new words learned into a paragraph, class conversation, or substitute in a sample dialogue or group activity.
6. Try to memorize at least two words (if not 10 or five words a day) to increase your vocabulary.
I hope this helps and is fun. Happy teaching! Happy learning! Become a word wizard!
