When looking for free Catholic Bibles, it is important to consider several factors. For example, it must be the Bible, which contains the Deuteronomy-Canonical Books (called Apocrypha by others). In addition, one must decide what kind of Bible one wants. A printed Bible? Audio Bible? In this article, I will discuss the best places to find free Catholic Bibles.
In terms of print version, the most obvious translations that come to mind are the New American Bible and the New Revised Standard Version. Each of these texts contains all the books recognized as holy books by the Roman Catholic Church. The New American Bible is a distinctly Catholic translation, while the New Revised Standard Version is an ecumenical translation suitable for both Catholic and non-Catholic readers. I am not aware of a free print version of these translations; however, print versions are available to view online. For the best place to see the New American Bible online for free, I would recommend the US Conference of Catholic Bishops website. Not only does this site have the New American Bible, but the text is divided into lexical readings for each day, making this site unique among free Catholic Bibles.
The best site for the online viewable text of the New Revised Standard Version is Bible.Oremus.org. The text is not as easy to use as other online Bibles I have looked at; however, it is difficult to find the Revised Standard Version elsewhere. This translation is often chosen for academic discourse and is therefore highly respected. So, although the interface is not very pleasing, it is worth engaging with the site to read this version for free.
Finally, a free audio version of these texts is also available. Unfortunately or not, free versions are available through trials. The entire New American Bible is available for free download through a trial program. In contrast, only the books of the New Testament are available for the New Revised Standard version, which is still free with a trial. I am not aware of any sites that can stream the audio of these texts for free, although this is a common practice in many Protestant translations. So the trial may be the best and only way to listen to free Catholic Bibles in audio format.
