The Multidisciplinary Nature of Linguistics

Language is a common theme that covers all mankind. Undoubtedly, language, the most important invention of mankind, makes it possible to preserve history, transmit literature and drama, and embrace philosophy. It is through language that the visual and performing arts, as well as mathematics, are analyzed, and language shares with them the quality of symbolic expression. Cultural and political organization, as well as trade, cooperative labor, architecture, and social planning, are made possible through the manipulation of oral and written language forms. Language also provides insight into the psyche and is a key tool of both education and propaganda. Furthermore, language, as an implementation of highly complex physiological and cerebral processes, represents the greatest achievement of human biological evolution.

Due to the dominance of language in all areas of human life, linguistics needs a multifaceted search. While the core group of theoretical linguists work on comprehensive analyzes of the internal syntactic, morphological, and phonological structures of individual languages, a larger group of scholars approach language from a number of interdisciplinary perspectives. These include linguistic anthropologists, sociolinguists, psycholinguists, philosophers of language, neurolinguists, historical and comparative linguists. Linguistics has a vibrant applied branch that focuses on issues such as translation and interpretation, first and second language pedagogy, literacy, language planning and policy, discourse analysis, cognitive processing, intercultural communication, and speech pathology.

Unfortunately, despite the centrality of language, linguistics as a science is relatively unknown to the general public. Misconceptions of linguists as polyglots or grammarians persist in public consciousness. Even at the post-secondary level, linguistics is only studied by a limited population, perhaps because people tend to take language for granted.

The University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras (like many other universities) offers numerous linguistics courses in the Department of English (at the BA, MA, and Ph.D. levels) and in the Graduate Program in Linguistics. In addition, courses on linguistic issues are offered in Education, Philosophy, Spanish Studies, Psychology, and Anthropology. Although relatively few, the eager student has many opportunities to become familiar with linguistics.

What is needed is serious consideration of ways to make linguistics more attractive and palatable to students who may fear hidden symbols and abstruse theory. Linguistic concepts and language awareness (in age-appropriate forms) should be incorporated into elementary and secondary education programs so that students are prepared to face the field at the college level with interest and fearlessness. Given that language is the universal treasure of mankind, linguistics should be promoted as a vital tool, the ultimate multidisciplinary endeavor, to understand the human essence in all its manifestations.
