Thank You in Chinese: The Appropriate Way!
There are many ways to say thank you in Chinese! Not only can you review all the verbal expressions used to say thank you, but considering we’re talking about Chinese culture, you might want to consider the value of actions in being grateful. Actions speak volumes in China (compared to words)!
How to say thank you in Chinese
You can simply use the Chinese character “Xie” to say “thank you” (said in the falling fourth tone, which sounds like a sigh of relief). Thank you is usually said “Xie xie” because you will notice that repeating something in Chinese is a way of showing emphasis. But of course, it’s rare to hear a character say it just once.
If you want to say the perfect “thank you” in Chinese, think about who you’re addressing first. If you are talking to a peer or even someone younger than you, then the “you” you will use will be the frequently used character of “Ni” which descends and rises on the third tone. So the whole expression will be “Xie xie ni”.
Instead, if you find yourself thanking someone older, more respected, or someone you want to show respect or courtesy to, by all means use the more polite form, “Nin” .” (This character is pronounced with a rising second tone, just as you would say “Huh?” (like the sound that comes out when). Then, if you put it all together, it will be the phrase “Xie xie nin”.
How to say thank you very much
Of course, there are different ways to say “thank you very much”. You may find one expression more commonly used in different parts of the country than others, but they’re all good options when you want to express your gratitude more. However, you may find that these expressions of thanks are not used as often as they are in English, perhaps because if one is exceptionally grateful, it is wise to show that gratitude through action.
Again, one way to say thank you very much is “Duo xie”. While the first character “duo” is spoken with the first tone, the second character “xie” is still spoken with the falling fourth tone. “Duo” literally means many, many or many, so it literally means “Thank you very much”.
The second option for Thank you very much is a bit longer but it says something like “Fei chang gan xie”. “Fei chang” are characters with ultimate or multiple meanings (spoken first with a level, first tone, then second tone rising for “chang”). “Gan xie” is said with a falling and rising third tone, while “xie” is still said with a falling fourth tone. “Gan xie” is both the verb “to be grateful, grateful” and the noun “gratitude or gratitude.”
Other options for saying thank you in Chinese
Additional options for saying thank you in Chinese that are just as powerful (if not more so) include several ways to act in accordance with Chinese culture. While we’ve taught that gift giving is a great way to show our gratitude, let’s explore other options. Helping or helping another person is a more powerful way to say thank you.
What actions are acceptable? You may find the answers quite general or unusual, but the help tasks are probably the best way to go. This can range from introducing someone who can meet a need, doing what you can to prepare a meal for them, or repairing an item they need (now or in the future).
Buying gifts is another option, but not always appreciated. This could mean buying lunch or dinner for the person you want to thank, buying some kind of special meal or some really expensive wine, or buying a package of one of their favorite things like tea, cigarettes or even snacks. The key here is to get a gift that will be useful to the recipient so you can say thank you properly in Chinese!
