If The Earth’s Second Moon Is Cruithne Then Who Were The Cruithne?

The Cruites were an ancient people, occasionally mentioned in historical Irish sources, who lived in the British Isles during the Iron Age, arriving between about 800 and 500 BC. they worshiped the mother, the goddess of fertility.

In historical times they were reckoned by paternal line, in the male line, hence their traditional descent from Conall Cearnach (“Conal of the Victories”), one of the legendary heroes of early Irish literature. Such Gaelic ancestral heroes are euhemerized gods (“gods made of flesh”) from the ancient Celtic “Otherworld” of pre-Christian times, being the last ancestors of all the ethnic groups of Gaeldom. Conall Cearnach is ultimately the male manifestation of Cruithne’s original mother goddess Brigid (later Saint Brigid).

According to TF O’Rahilly’s historical model, the Cruithne were descended from the Priteni, who O’Rahilly claims were the first Celtic group to inhabit the British Isles and are identified with the Picts of Scotland. They settled in England and Ireland between 700 and 500 BC. They used iron and spoke a P-Celtic language, calling themselves Priteni or Pritani.

More recent theories, supported by archaeological evidence, suggest that the Cruithne were a pre-Celtic people and spoke a non-Indo-European language before the spread and dominance of Celtic culture in the British Isles. It is also believed that these people are descendants of the aboriginal Neolithic people of the islands.

Around 50 BC, Diodorus wrote about “the Pretanians who lived in the country called Iris (Ireland)”. The first reference to the name Pict is found in a Latin document dated 297 BC. It should be noted that around 325 BC Pytheas first recorded the local name of the islands as the Greek Prettanike – probably related to the Cornish region – which Diodorus later called Pretannia.

In Britain, these Priteni were later absorbed by invaders and lost their cultural identity, except for the practice of painting or tattooing their bodies in the far north, known to the Romans as the Picti or “colored people” (a practice that had by then died out among other Celtic tribes). In Ireland, too, Priteni was largely adopted by later settlers; but a few pockets of them managed to maintain their cultural, if not political, independence until the Christian era. Until then they were identified as Cruithne, a P-Celtic language descendant of Priteni.

Among the surviving Crute tribes were the Loiges (the Loiges were commonly referred to as the “Seven Septs of Leix”. In historical times, several families of this tribe, including the O’Mores, O’Nolans, O’Dorans, O’Lawlors and O’Dowlings) and Fothairt (The Fothairt or Fotharta were mercenary tribes of Laigin and possibly Cruithin (Pict) origin. They were probably allies of the Ui Bairrche and explained why they split into two main groups: Fothairt in Chairn (alias Fothar Tíre, barony of Forth, Co. Wexford) and Fothairt of Chairt, Co. Wexford) and Fothairt of Mag (barony of Forth, Co. Carlow. In historical times the O’Mores were leaders of Mag Fothairt. Fea).

The name of the first of these clans – modernized as Laois – was revived and given to one of the counties of Leinster (previously known as Queen’s County as a result of the colonist plantation attempt). By this stage in the 16th century, Cruithne was fully integrated into Gaelic Ireland and indistinguishable from its neighbours.
