Five Effective Business Analysis Techniques
The term business analysis refers to the discipline of identifying needs within a business and determining the appropriate solution.
These solutions may include changes in the organization itself, strategic development or the development of new policies. A person who undertakes the responsibility of business analysis is called a business analyst.
When the time inevitably comes for some kind of change, the business analyst has several techniques at his disposal. Exactly which methods to use will depend on the nature of the problem and the scope of the solution. Five that have been successfully used by business analysts to help solve a number of different problems.
MANY
The MOST technique is an internal analysis. It consists of four attributes defined by a business analyst to ensure that the project you are working on is relevant and on track. These attributes are:
Mission (where the business intends to go)
Objectives (main objectives that will help achieve the mission)
Strategies (various options to advance)
Tactics (how different strategies are implemented)
PESTLE
The PESTLE technique is an external analysis designed to examine the many different external elements that affect a business and its operations. It includes six attributes:
Political (Current and future political influences)
Economic (impact on local, national and world economy)
Sociological (Different ways in which society can influence an organization)
Technological (Impact of new and emerging technology)
Legal (Effect of National and World Law)
Environmental (local, national and global environmental problems)
CATWOE
CATWOE is a technique used to encourage critical thinking about what a business is trying to achieve. This technique includes six different elements:
Customers (who benefits from the top-level workflow and how does the problem affect them?)
Actors (who is in the situation? Who implements the solutions? What will affect their success?)
Transformation Process (what processes or systems does the problem affect?)
World View (what is the big picture and what are the wider implications of the issue?)
Owner (who owns the process or situation under investigation and what is their role in solving it?)
Environmental Constraints (what are the constraints on the solution and its success?)
SWOT
A SWOT analysis is used to provide a more complete overview of both internal and external factors affecting a business. There are four attributes for SWOT:
Strengths (check strengths and things done well within the company)
Weaknesses (examine weaknesses and areas for improvement)
Opportunities (explore opportunities for improvement in all areas including market share)
Threats (examine the obstacles the business faces in achieving its goals)
FIVE WHY
The Five Whys technique is used to help get to the root of any problem within a business. It is a way of asking questions to investigate the cause and effect of a particular situation.
You’ll start with a problem like “my car won’t start,” then you’ll consistently ask why until the root of the problem is revealed and the solution is clear.
Business analysis can be a complicated and complicated process. Within this broad spectrum are several sub-disciplines, roles and more techniques.
All businesses face situations and problems that require attention to help them move forward. With an experienced business analyst using the right techniques, the solution won’t be far behind.
