African Travel Tips when visiting Namibia

The name of Namibia is derived from the Namib Desert, which is considered to be the oldest desert in the world. This unique geological feature is known for the pristine and awe-inspiring quality of its landscape. It is this feature that most characterizes the country and is home to some of the country’s best tourist attractions, notably Sossusvlei, Sandwich Harbor and Skeleton Coast Park.

Far from being lifeless and barren, the desert has an unusual flora and fauna adapted to the desert, including a large number of endemic plant, bird, reptile and insect species. Many of these species are of special scientific interest and attract scientists from all over the world.

CAPITAL: Windhoek

CLIMATE: Namibia has a dry climate typical of a semi-desert country with frequent droughts. Days are mostly hot to very hot, and nights are generally cool. The average daytime temperature in summer is 20°C-34°C, and the average night temperature in winter is between 0°C-10°C. There are great differences between the arid southern desert and semi-desert areas and the tropical northeast with abundant summer rains. The best time to visit Namibia is from April to October.

Currency: 1 Namibian Dollar = 100 cents. Rand is accepted as legal tender. Traveller’s checks are accepted almost everywhere. Travelers checks in Deutsche Mark, US dollars or Swiss Francs are recommended. In general, credit cards are accepted at most hotels, as well as Namibian Wildlife Resorts, where MasterCard, Visa, (not always Diners Club and Amex), Namibian Dollars, Rand traveler’s checks and bank guaranteed checks are accepted. Credit cards are not accepted for fuel.

ELECTRICITY: 220 volts, 50Hz. Plugs are 3-pin circular.

HEALTH: A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers over 1 year of age from infected areas. Visitors are at risk of malaria (risk exists in northern regions such as Ovamboland and the Caprivi Strip from November to June, as well as in Omaheke and Otjozondjupa and along the Kavango and Kunene rivers throughout the year), hepatitis A, poliomyelitis and typhus. Tap water is safe.

LANGUAGE: English is the official language. Afrikaans and German are often spoken in shops, hotels and restaurants.

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS: New Year’s Day (January 1); Independence Day (March 21); Good Friday (April 9); Easter Monday (April 12); Labor Day (May 1); Kassinga Day (May 4); Meraj Day (May 20); Africa Day (May 25); Heroes’ Day (August 26); Goodwill Day (October 7); Human Rights Day (December 10); Christmas Day (December 25); Boxing Day (December 26).

SHOPPING: wood carvings; basketry; pottery; fur coats and jackets, especially Swakara; gold jewelry; custom-designed handwoven rugs and wall hangings made from karakul wool; Namibian semi-precious stones and diamonds; Herero dolls.

SOCIAL CONVENTIONS: Christian is the majority. Western customs and manners are observed. Business suits are worn in winter; safari suits are acceptable in summer.

TIME DIFFERENCE: GMT +2 (GMT +1 during April-August)

RELATED: 10 percent of the bill is customary.
