Japanese Genkouyoushi and Essay Tips
It is a type of paper used in all manuscripts of writings in the Japanese language. Vertical writing usually starts from right to left and top to bottom. Horizontal writing starts from left to right and from top to bottom. Here are some tips for you.
Vertical Writing
- Title: Type the title on line 1. The 1st word starts from the 4th square. If the title starts with numbers, write them in Kanji.
- Name: Line 2 contains the writer’s name. The last name comes before the first name. Leave 1 square between last name and first name. Also leave 1 square under the name.
- First Sentence of Essay or Paragraph: Begins on line 3 in square 2. Each new paragraph starts from the 2nd square.
- Punctuation marks: usually occupy their own squares. Exception: when they occur at the top of the next line, we write them in the lower right quarter next to the last word of the current line.
- Small symbols: each one occupies 1 square and we place it in the upper right quarter of the square.
- Subheading (if any): has 1 blank line before and after. It starts from the 3rd square of the new line. If there are no subheadings, start the next paragraph on a new line after the previous paragraph.
- Extension mark: when writing from top to bottom, an extension mark should also be written from top to bottom in the middle of the square.
- Writing numbers: use kanji instead of Arabic numerals. One number occupies 1 square.
Horizontal Writing
- All of the rules (1-8) for vertical writing usually apply to horizontal writing.
- Small characters occupy the lower left quarter of 1 square.
- When writing the chat script, we use Japanese quotation marks.
Essay Tips
- Always aim to write about 90% of the required words. 90-100% is great. Below 80% will not give you a good grade.
- Always write Kanji if possible. Too much Hiragana will not help you get good grades.
- Be persistent. Stick to the form you choose to use for sentences throughout the essay. We recommend using the simple form to enter whatever you want to write within the word limit. The simple form also gives readers a friendly feel.
- Avoid using slang or colloquial words/expressions when writing a formal essay.
- Avoid repeating the same words or the same content too much.
- Avoid writing a sentence longer than 2 lines of Genkouyoushi.
- Make the logic of the sentence flow.
- Make sure there are no typos or typos. for example, you think of 1 word, but you spelled it differently.
- If you must write with a pencil, make sure you choose the right one for legibility and ease of writing.
‘H’ indicates hardness. for example, 3H is harder than H.
‘B’ indicates blackness. for example, 3B is softer than B.
An ‘F’ pencil indicates that you have sharpened to a fine point.
