Finding Jesus – By Learning About How Others View Him

Universal Life Church

INTRODUCTION

Most of us are very familiar with the traditional Christian concept of Jesus. To summarize — the son of God was born of man and then suffered and died on the cross to save us from our sins. His physical resurrection three days later is triumphant as a victory of life over death, followed by the tenant that only through faith in him and his sacrifice could salvation and eternal life come.

But even this simple summary of Christianity does not cover all who call themselves Christians within the various divisions of this faith. I could actually spend an entire lesson on the subject of the virgin birth. Some believe that the concept derives from both wishful thinking and mistranslation of ancient languages. For others, it’s canon.

Some Christians don’t feel the need for their beliefs to be the exclusive path to righteousness, others really don’t care if Jesus died on the cross; the account can be considered allegorical as the story of Adam and Eve is frequently seen. To others it would be heretical.

But overall, Christians believe in Christ, and his teachings are revealed primarily through the New Testament of the Bible.

Compare our tradition with those who subscribe to other religions. They often see Jesus from a very different religious and historical perspective. There are even those who argue that Jesus did not even exist at all – that he is a fiction similar to Hercules (supposedly born of a god and a woman too). Parallels to the rise of Jesus can be found in other cultures at other times, but today Christianity is the world’s most dominant religion while Balder (a Norse god with Christ-like qualities) is largely forgotten.

The purpose of this course is to examine how Jesus is perceived by other religious traditions. Through that study and perspective, it should help us to take a closer look at our own concept of him and learn through the differences in perception.

I suggest (that at least for the purpose of this course) there is no right or wrong way to perceive Jesus. For example, to use a modern analogy, if a dozen movies all portray Jesus differently, we can gain a greater appreciation for his essence through “Gospel,” “The Passion of Christ,” The Greatest Story Ever Told, or even compare “The Life of Brian.” We may be more comfortable with some images than others – but in the case of the world’s major religions, there is something to be learned from the diversity of experience.

Here is a brief summary of how the major religions view Jesus.

JUDAISM– Jesus was a Jew and before Christianity carved out its identity as its own religion, it was considered a Jewish offshoot, with synagogues and churches often existing side by side, many times with many ordinary worshippers. Because of the lack of a solid historical record, Jesus initially did not attract much attention from the Jewish community. As Christianity became institutionalized and then powerful, the persecution of Jews did not lead to much of an open discussion about Jesus, in fact most of the attention to him was inherently negative.

This lasted until the 18th century when Jewish scholars began to rediscover Jesus as a reformer who challenged the corrupt religious power structure of his time. The teachings of Jesus found a home in the Reformed movement, especially with the similarities in tradition between the monotheistic Jewish and Christian faiths – which of course share a common origin.

ISLAM– Muslims regard Jesus as a great prophet and revere him as the son of Mary, the only woman specifically mentioned in the Koran. He is looked upon as a descendant of Abraham, miraculously born of a virgin and his life ends with a great ascension – all this fits nicely with the Muslim tradition.

Teachings about Jesus come from the Koran, not the New Testament, where he is considered a prophet not the son of God. His miracles are accepted and Jesus is sometimes mentioned in Muslim prayers — but he did not die on the cross.

Instead, God took him up to heaven, but he will eventually return as a Muslim to defeat the Antichrist – and then be allowed to die a natural death.

BUDDHISM– Some Buddhists (but not all) believe that both Jesus and Buddha were born of virgins. They both spent time in a wilderness and were tempted by an evil being. Yet they both came back wiser for the experience, performing miracles and adopting the religious status quo of the time. Their preaching has much in common and both are also betrayed followers.

Buddhists see Christ as Buddha-like, an enlightened being but their death is very different; the cross was not a peaceful passing, but Jesus’ later ascension bears similarities to Buddha’s passing.

HINDUISM– Some Hindu scriptures describe a Jesus-like figure who may have slipped away from Palestine when he was 14 and spent his formative years in India. “Issa” supposedly took on authorities and ended up in a lot of trouble before fleeing home in his late 20s to counsel his own Jewish people.

Nowhere does the Bible actually describe Jesus as a carpenter during his young adulthood; it’s just one of those assumptions Christians tend to make. For Hindus, it is only natural that Jesus would come to India to learn the secrets behind his own divinity.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus declared: “I and the Father are one.” It is not so different from attaining a Hindu state of “Krishna Consciousness”.
