Pet Rats: Understanding Common Rat Behavior and Body Language – A Rat /People dictionary
I’m about to take you “behind the scenes” into the rat mind. You could say it’s a Rat/People dictionary about Rat behavior.
If you pay close attention to the things I am about to reveal to you, you will definitely have more success with your pet rat.
First…what is a Rat Stare?
What is a Rat Stare I hear you ask?
Does your rat have a disturbing habit? Do they stare straight ahead for long periods of time?
Is it quite disturbing to see them staring for hours on end with their eyes wide open, motionless.
Do you see ratty dead people? Is it a sixth sense thing?
Don’t worry you’re not the only one. For anyone who owns a rat, this is normal rat behavior.
The Rat Stare and other rat behaviors and body language are explained in this issue.
Pet owners often talk to their “babies” in human baby talk, but as with any animal (as smart as they are!) you’re probably better off understanding your rats’ behavior through their body language. Especially with rats, there are clear signs that they will demonstrate, and that you will be able to successfully interpret.
The following are some of the typical things pet rat owners have seen their companions do from time to time. Some are funny, some may be a little scary…but rest assured that most of it is just your normal rattie behavior!
Note: this rat behavior is generally completely normal of rats that are healthy and well socialized, with no current, apparent medical problems (they are active and their diets and feces are normal). If your rat is not eating properly, has improper stools or exhibits other unusual or destructive behavior – consult a small animal vet or your rat’s breeder immediately.
Body language –
One of your rats curls its tail (while your other rat does not)
Possible reasons:
Your rat is simply balancing itself. A rat’s tail is for balance – even if one rat seems to use their tail more. Look and you’ll see both rats hold their tails ½” off the ground, especially when balancing on your shoulder or climbing to a higher space.
Body language –
Your rat stands up and ‘waves’ its nose in the air. Your rat swings its head from side to side.
Possible reasons:
Your rat catches a scent! Rats have incredible senses of smell, and they just identify something in the air that is interesting to them.
Rats don’t have better vision. Never fear, your rat can see – but sight is not it’s strongest sense, making this normal behavior part of your rat’s vision process.
Body language –
Your rat licks you all the time.
Your rat grinds their teeth in your ear!
Your rat’s eyeballs are screaming out of their heads!
Possible reasons:
Face it – you are one big rat to them!
It’s actually a great compliment to you, and all that behavior (teeth “bruxing” and eyes “stunning”) means that your rat loves you and will try to take care of you like a true companion (they probably also like the taste of salt from your skin!).
These are some common rat behaviors and rat body language that people have questions about and experience with their pet rat. These explanations I have provided will guarantee to help you understand your buddy(s) and ensure you are a successful rat owner.
