A Matter of Doubt: The Life of Claude Bernard By Peter Wise – Book Review
Have you ever stared into a Renoir painting, seen fashionable 19th century French women dressed in ornate gowns, with distinguished gentlemen in tailcoats and tall hats, crossing a damp and shiny cobbled road with horse-drawn carriages in the background, umbrellas open , wondering who were these people? It is very possible that one of the men was Monsieur Claude Bernard.
Using words to the skill level of Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s use of paint, Peter Wise creates a literary book that decorates a world, a period piece, with complex human emotions, determination, drive and passion, together with respectful French conversation in his epic work A Matter of Doubt – the life of Claude Bernard. He created a hybrid work of fiction based on fact; a world in which new relationships are explained verbatim in terms of generally accepted historical encounters.
A matter of doubt articulates, from a third-person narrative view, the life of Claude Bernard and how he was strongly influenced in his logic and reason by René Descartes, the famous French philosopher who questioned “everything”. This led Descartes to become one of the key figures in the creation of what we call today Scientific method. Claude Bernard used practice, and took nothing at face value, and performed blind experimentation to support his medical research, thus becoming one of mankind’s most accomplished physicians shedding light on many aspects of the human condition of health and well-being. Although controversial even at the time, Claude Bernard used animal experimentation to an extreme, which upset his wife and daughters, eventually leading to a divorce; however, because he was convinced of the greater good of ridding humanity of disease, justified the use of vivisection.
A matter of doubt begins when Claude Bernard moved to Paris to study medicine as a young adult, working as a pharmacist to write a play and dreaming of becoming a famous playwright. His dichotomy of interests, so eloquently portrayed by Peter Wise, captures the reader and draws one into the world of yesteryear, a time less complicated by the limits of technology, but such a modern group of people as ours who are alive today. Peter Wise’s use of language, with its precision, thoughtful comments from the wonderfully believable characters, and meaning of respectful interactions is unlike much of the everyday use of words we read and use today. He really pulls the reader back in time, like the Time machine in the HG Wells classic, to the mid-1800s, dropping you among high society in Paris, France, amidst famous people like Louis Pasteur.
When I read this book, I was pleasantly transported away from modern life and rewarded with gaining an intimate understanding of the strength of values, determination and determination of Claude Bernard, with a greater appreciation for the medical breakthroughs he now if founder is accredited. The brilliance of Peter Wise’s writing skills is truly astonishing as he is so arrogantly respectful of the reader’s intelligence while still explaining the fundamentals of the factual evidence portrayed in the scientific medical work. Although a very sophisticated book, I would recommend it for young adults to read as an example of excellence in technique, as well as for the seasoned historical reader; or anyone for that matter, looking to be entertained while being educated. It is useful to have a background in French, because this book jumps seamlessly from French to English with phrases, names and very interestingly uses the thought patterns of the wonderful French culture in the description of events. I believe this book is also available in French translation. It’s a good life!
